Nightwing #102

A very cool aspect of this Nightwing run has been how seamlessly writer Tom Taylor transformed it from a Nightwing solo title to a Titans book
That’s come with no drop off in the quality or at the expense of Nightwing being relegated to the background of his own book.

Nightwing and the Titans have to stop Blockbuster’s daughter from being apprehended by The Grinning Man. Taylor is getting a great jump start on his upcoming Titans series and refining his take on the characters. The character interplay is spot on although I still wish Arsenal and Tempest were also part of the mix.

Artist Travis Moore does a terrific job of making the Grinning Man look seriously creepy. Combined with Moore’s usual incredibly clean and gorgeous artwork it makes for a serious impression.

The color work from Adriano Lucas remains excellent. There’s a smoothness to it that complements Moore’s pencils so effortlessly.

C.S. Pacat continues the Nightwing/Jon Kent Superman backstory with artist Eduardo Pansica. It’s a streamlined murder mystery that plays into Nightwing’s strengths while he mentors Jon in the same way Batman guided his early career. Pansica provides his usual steady work though he draws Jon’s hair off model.

Nightwing remains one of DC’s top three titles and the involvement of the Titans has only enhanced that sense that this has been a very special and memorable run for Dick Grayson fans.

Rating: 10 out of 10
