Wonder Woman #797

The Becky Cloonan/Michael W. Conrad era of Wonder Woman is nearing its conclusion with a showdown against Hera and the gods loyal to her.

This issue follows up on events that played out in Lazarus Planet: Revenge of the Gods, which would leave Wonder Woman readers confused if they skipped that issue. Hera and the Wizard Shazam have killed Zeus leaving Diana, Queen Nubia and the other Amazons to battle their forces.

Hera ambushed Diana and imprisoned her, prompting a rescue from the cloaked figure who aided Nubia on Themyscara.

The cover mentions an appearance by the new champion of Shazam, who never appears. Not unless the mysterious hooded figure is Billy Batson aiding Wonder Woman and the Amazons. That would be a weird spoiler though so let’s assume that’s not the case.

Consistent with the Cloonrad run, the ideas are there, but the execution is somewhat off. And the stakes don’t feel as threatening as they did in the Lazarus Planet tie-in written by G. Willow Wilson.

Amancay Nahuelpan’s art is reliably strong and is a good fit for Wonder Woman. There’s a good mix of intricate action sequences and expressive characters. The colors from Tamra Bonvillain is amazing. DC has three of the elite colorists in the industry with Bonvillain, Jordie Bellaire and Jeromy Cox.

There’s a sense that the Revenge of the Gods arc could go in several directions as Cloonrad try to make sense of their various ideas. Hopefully they’ll settle on a workable one as their run draws to a conclusion.
