Stargirl The Lost Children #5

I’ve gone from questioning this ‘ridiculously’ random Golden Age retcon to wondering how long it’s going to take for a Young All-Star Squadron title to start after Stargirl and The Lost Children ends next month.

That’s the strength of good writing. It’s not uncommon for Geoff Johns of course yet it’s nice to be reminded every so often.

Stargirl is rallying her allies for a showdown with Childminder while Red Arrow motivates Judy Garrick to break free from captivity before Hourman III takes the children away.

The arrival of the former JSA member has made this mini-series even more intriguing since he’s clearly not a villain yet appears to be taking orders from another yet to be revealed character. Johns has maintained the mystery throughout the series.

Equally impressive is the amount of character development Johns is packing into the series allowing these new additions time to showcase their powers and personalities.

Todd Nauck’s artwork has been outstanding. This series has been a textbook example of pairing an artist with a title that’s perfectly suited to their style. Nauck’s art has rarely been better and if there’s any justice Nauck is already signed up for the next title with Stargirl and company.

Matt Herms’ bright colors give that hopeful tone that’s such a staple of the Golden Age while letting just enough darkness slide in to convey menacing threats. Letterer Rob Leigh keeps delivering well crafted dialogue and effects as well.

This book has successfully exceeded my expectations and shows why these characters have a viable future in this Dawn of DC.
