IDW comic reviews 3/29/23 – Saturday Morning Adventures Dungeons & Dragons #1
After the success of popular 80s cartoons, IDW takes the Saturday Morning Adventures series to another fan favorite property — Dungeons and Dragons.
Writers David M. Booher and Sam Maggs have a clear understanding of the tone of the series and juggle the characters appropriately so everyone sounds as authentic as they did in the cartoon.
The art by George Kambadais is done in a more exaggerated style that’s significantly different from the cartoon designs. That’s been the appeal of the Saturday Morning Adventures brand to have the comic art match the cartoon aesthetic as closely as possible.
It’s not that Kambadais’ art is bad — there’s a lively sense of movement in every panel that captures the youthful spirit of the series well — but those looking for a faithful visual translation might be disappointed.
Establishing the characters and a big skills showcase fight does come at the expense of setting up the overall plot.
It’s a minor problem as this was an enjoyably fun start to kick off the mini-series.
