Star Wars The Black Series Fennec Shand review – The Book of Boba Fett
Fennec Shand avoided the lazy claims of being a character added to the Star Wars mythos in an attempt to pander to ‘woke audiences.’ That’s because Fennec is just a great, cool bounty hunter character that happens to be a woman instead of being awesome and amazing because she’s a woman.
I’ve been looking forward to Fennec since her debut in The Mandalorian. Much like The Bad Batch she immediately captured my imagination with her excellent design. And having the basics for a Melinda May figure was a nice bonus.
Let’s see if Hasbro deserves the payment for this figure or if it’s time to set up a new bounty.
Package: This is the standard packaging we’ve seen for a while. I’m still a fan of the open window, side mural art and distinct accent color.
Fennec is part of The Book of Boba Fett series and gets an olive-green color reminiscent of Boba’s armor.

The bio is definitely less informative as the norm for the line, almost appearing intentionally vague. And it’s interesting that it’s Fennec not the title character who gets the Number One distinction in the BOBF line.
Likeness: Hasbro has done solid work on actor likeness for the last few years. This holds true for Fennec’s figure, which sports an impressive take on Ming-Na Wen. There’s no mistaking her with this sculpt although her cheeks and jawline are too round and not as angular as Wen.

All of the smaller details like the intricate braid work of her hair, her braided ponytail and scar around her left eye are intact.
Fennec’s outfit is also faithfully captured with all of the complex detailing of her trench coat with the ornate pattern of the chest portion, the communication device around her right collarbone and the ribbed gloves and boots.
The lower section of her coat is also properly arranged with a flared-out section from the belt and the paneling at the tips. All told it’s a tremendous sculpt with excellent detailing.

Paint: A highly detailed sculpt does pave the way for some paint errors specifically with the orange lining and the hair braids.
Thankfully my figure had a crisp paint job with few problems. The orange lining around her left arm had some black paint spillover, but that’s not unexpected due to their smaller size.
Hasbro even added paint apps to Fennec’s scar, which was a nice touch.
Maybe the most impressive bit to the paintjob is the work done with her hair braiding, which features an orange-string like material and a mix of brown coloring in the ponytail.
Scale: Fennec comes up to about the earpiece of Mando’s helmet so she’s noticeably shorter than him and Boba Fett. She’s also shorter than Cara Dune, Koska Reeves and Bo-Katan Kryze.
Articulation: Fennec is a nimble bounty Hunter utilizing parkour to swiftly scale rooftops and pursue her quarry.
The trench coat does limit some of her flipping and kicking ability, but I think that’s a decent compromise in preserving the integrity of the sculpt.
I was more impressed that Hasbro made sure to engineer her shoulders and arms properly to allow for her to hit a signature sniping pose. That was fun and thanks to the articulation was no trouble at all to pull off.
Fennec Shand has:
- neck
- ball-jointed shoulders (butterfly)
- elbow
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso
- hips
- thighs
- knees
- ankles
Accessories: Fennec comes with her two essential accessories — her rifle and helmet.
Fennec has one of the cooler helmets in the Star Wars universe and it turned out great in figure form.
It’s scaled properly without looking huge over her head and you can still see her eyes through the small visor. It’s a slight tight fit, but I don’t think it’s so bad it’ll create paint rub on her face.
Her rifle has a fantastic amount of detail with a large amount of paneling. The scope and barrel are also nicely done and the strap slings over her shoulder smoothly though mine does not want to stay positioned on her shoulder for very long.
Thankfully, the strap is removable so you don’t have to constantly fiddle with it.
Worth it? Fennec is gonna set you back around $24. This is very close to the breaking point with the line’s price point. The Black Series doesn’t have the benefit of a Build-A-Figure part to help offset some of the costs.
Fennec has a great amount of detail and is a wholly original sculpt, which helps in her case of justifying the price point slightly.
Rating: 9.5 out of 10
Fennec is a pretty outstanding figure that with just a minor tweak to the head sculpt and a means to use her hip articulation more would be perfect. It’s still darn close and a welcome addition to my Mandalorian shelf.
Where to get it? While you might stumble onto Fennec at Target or Walmart, the best option now is Amazon or Entertainment Earth.
