Masters of the Universe Masterverse Frosta review

While I wasn’t hardly as avid a collector of the She-Ra: Princess of Power line as I was Masters of the Universe, I did have my favorites. Frosta was definitely one of that crew thanks to her actual worthwhile power set. She-Ra avoided feeling too much like a “girl’s show” and I enjoyed watching the POP characters battling Hordak and The Evil Horde.

Frosta provides She-Ra with some more back-up in the Masterverse line. I was able to get her for clearance making her an even better deal. Let’s see if Frosta warms my heart or chills me to the core.

Packaging: I love the Masterverse Revelation packaging as it stands out on the shelf due to its dark blue color scheme and unique boxed showcase of the figures.

The wide window allows for a clear look at all the accessories and paintjobs, which are rarely an issue. I also dig the two portraits of Frosta.

The side one has her conjuring up a small ice sculpture of He-Man while the other has her charging into battle in a showcase of her accessories.

Her bio also explains her role in Etheria and how she’s been a staunch ally for She-Ra. And how cool is it that her headquarters is called Castle Chill?

Likeness: Frosta has a determined head sculpt that’s fitting for a queen. She’s got a stern expression that can still be interpreted as conveying several emotions.

Frosta’s outfit looks great playing up the icy aspects of her with “frost” points at her corset, belt, skirt and boots. The gem at the center of her corset is sculpted to actually look like a gem with various edges instead of just a plain circle. Detailing on her belt is nice as well and it was a pleasant surprise to see the boot tips were sculpted as well.

Her hair could flow out a bit wider, but this is a case of making it functional and not restricting articulation.

Frosta has a cloth cape with flared edges attached to a collar. It sits naturally along her shoulders and drapes down smoothly.

I appreciate that Mattel favors cloth for the capes instead of plastic, which could potentially anchor the figures down. The cape is also removable.

Paint: Mattel has been pretty consistent with the paintwork for the Masterverse line. I was curious how the streak would hold up considering the clash of a dark blue and white.

I love the strong shade of blue used as it’s very eye catching allowing Frosta to stand out among the rest of the POP characters.

For Frosta, Mattel went with more of a pearlescent white, which holds the white stronger against darker colors. Frosta’s costume has a number of pointed edges and the paintwork is crisper with the linework than I would expect. There’s some fading and overspray, but it’s definitely not a sloppy application.

Just for fun, Mattel added an action feature with Frosta’s hair, which changes color based on the temperature. Run a little cold water over it and it turns a lighter, icy shade of blue while the standard look is more of a darker blue. It’s wild that Mattel didn’t mention that on the packaging as that’s a very cool (sorry) feature.

Scale: The Revelation line is a 7″ scale. Frosta was about the same height as She-Ra and should be slightly shorter than Hordak and his Evil Horde.

Articulation: Frosta sports 30 points of articulation. While the joints aren’t as smooth compared to some other lines, Frosta can hit a variety of useful poses showcasing her powers or utilizing her staff.

As more of a range fighter, she attacks from more of a distance, but the articulation allows her to mix it up close if necessary.

It’s probably time for Mattel to introduce some Horde Robots into the Masterverse line so I can army build a crop of them.

Accessories: Accessories are rarely lacking with the Masterverse line and Frosta has a decent amount for a non-deluxe offering.

She’s got her ice staff as well. There’s a bit of an action feature to it as the icy, translucent blue portion can rotate/spin. The rest of the staff is white and fits into her gripping hands with no problem.

Additionally, Frosta has swappable gesturing/spellcasting hands. Nice to have posing options.

Finally, she has an ice beam effect that slides over her hand as if she’s channeling her powers. The paintwork has a nice gradient effect with a light blue giving way to white. It’s a nice transition look and done very well for an accessor piece.

Worth it? Frosta was initially $21.99, but I was able to get her on clearance for $6.89. Eventually, I’m going to pay full price for these figures, but until then they are definitely the best value for me on the shelves. Even at retail price, I wouldn’t think I was getting ripped off so paying more than half off is a big win.

Rating: 9.7 out of 10

Frosta is a really fun figure. The hair is really the only limiting factor here and the cool color change feature just about makes up for the somewhat restricted articulation as a result. Even if you’re not big into She-Ra, I’d highly recommend Frosta.
