Image Comics reviews 6/14/23 – Void Rivals #1

Maybe the craziest part of Void Rivals is the big buzzy reveal that’s got comic readers hyped is arguably isn’t even the best part.

Writer Robert Kirkman seems like he’s in full universe building mode as he introduces Darak and Salila, two fighters from opposing sides of an endless conflict.

Their latest skirmish leaves them crashed on a desolate planet. With their resources diminished and no outside chance of rescue, the two hated rivals must find a way to co-exist if they have any hopes of survival.

Kirkman has mastered the art of making dialogue meaningful. Darak and Salila aren’t just prattling on.

Their exchanges are informative in conveying this conflict and how deep the hatred runs. Darak is the one who sees the value in partnering earlier while Salila is less trusting.

Artist Lorenzo De Felici brings a strong storyteller sense to his pages.

The two characters are on a barren land with little distinguish elements in the environment so De Felic puts the emphasis on the characters.

Their movements are intentional and deliberate as De Felic further explores their personalities with their postures.

Colorist Matheus Lopes uses a more washed out palette that’s befitting the tone of the story.

It’s an engaging setup and the creative team have a wide open premise to explore and that’s even before the reveal of how Void Rivals is part of a shared universe that opens up a ton of possibilities.

This is about as strong a debut as I’ve read in many months in the sci-fi realm of comic books and I’m very intrigued as to how this title will unfold.
