Image Comics reviews 7/26/23 – Night Club #6

Night Club wraps its first (!) volume with lol the carnage, mayhem and explosions you’d expect from this series.

Mark Millar’s young vampire series deftly captured what it would be like for modern teenagers to get superpowers even if it turns them into vampires.

With the serial killer vampire crew targeting their families Danny, Amy and Sam do what any aspiring heroes do — they hypnotize the police into handing over a plethora of weapons including C4 to launch a preemptive and hopefully final attack.

Like the other Millarworld titles, the violence and gore is secondary to the strong characterization. It’s only been six issues, but Millar has crafted the trio’s personalities so completely that their actions are totally consistent with their portrayals.

night club 6

This makes for a fun finale as Night Club is in that special realm of new heroes where they’re inexperienced enough to make mistakes and not always make the right call.

It’s refreshing reading heroes flying by the seat of their pants and having to come up with Plan C and D on the fly.

Juanan Ramirez’s art is so clean allowing him to go as detailed as needed in every panel while keeping the readers’ attention on the focal points. The action lands hard with an impact I could almost feel. Colorist Fabiana Mascolo avoids staining every panel with blood while incorporating bright colors that contrast beautifully with the normal vampire backdrop.

Letterer Clem Robins weaves in some cool fonts for the vampire dialect as well as amusing emphasis on certain words.

Night Club had an original concept and Millar, Ramirez, Mascolo and Robins ensured that there wasn’t going to be some disappointing final act.

Seeking a new fresh series to sink into? Check out Night Club, which was priced at a reader-friendly $1.99 save for this issue, which essentially kept that model as this is a double-sized installment.
