Star Wars The Black Series Jyn Erso review – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Jyn Erso is easily one of my favorite Star Wars protagonists. She’s complicated, complex and ultimately does whatever it takes to help usher in the end of the Empire. Rogue One was the film that got me thinking about diving back in to Hasbro’s Black Series line since MAFEX wasn’t moving fast enough on the characters for my liking.

The figures looked…OK, but lacked that killer likeness of MAFEX figures until Hasbro went with upgraded face printing that essentially leveled the playing field. With a package makeover to go along with the updated sculpts, I was all set to get Jyn and the rest of her Rogue One crew.

Let’s see if the second crack at Jyn was worth the wait or if I need to put it by a sandy beach somewhere…

Packaging: I love that the Black Series uses a different accent color for each film/series. Rogue One has a duck egg blue shade. Fittingly, Jyn is No. 1 in the Rogue One lineup so she leads off the fantastic mural.

Jyn’s bio takes a comprehensive approach with her character arc through Rogue One, which is probably the better approach for these RO write-ups.

Likeness: Need any proof that the face printing marked a major improvement for this figure? Take a look at the original release. The Felicity Jones likeness is pretty well done although there’s an almost waxy look to her head sculpt that tends to give it a little sheen.

That’s not necessary with the new version, which features an incredible likeness to Jones. This is probably one of the more accurate head sculpts I’ve seen in the line so far.

Jyn’s vest has some strong detailing with the zippers and pouches with pens(?). Her jacket has solid texturing and has the nice detail of a ridged stripe down the sleeves.

Paint: Jyn’s paintjob also got an upgrade with a noticeably darker wash that gives her outfit a much grittier and well-worn appearance. The original figure looked very much like a toy with the barest amount of paint applications.

There’s a little weirdness with Jyn’s neck still sporting the nearly grey flesh tone from the original figure creating a stark difference between the head and neck.

This is obscured with the hood/scarf piece although you’re covering most of her head to hide the neck, which isn’t the best solution either.

A minor issue on my figure was the yellow stripes on the jacket not being lined up precisely.

Scale: Jyn was shorter than the rest of her compatriots so she’s looking up at the other Rogue One characters including Chirrut Imwe, Baze Malbus and Cassian Andor.

Articulation: Jyn is a very nimble and athletic combatant, so she needs to be able to move smoothly. I wish Jyn had bicep articulation and she’s lacking the deeper cut in the elbows of more modern Black Series figures, which tend to make up for the lack of double-jointed elbows.

Jyn Erso has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • elbow (with swivel)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • hips
  • thighs
  • knees (double jointed)
  • ankles

Accessories: Jyn comes with two accessories.

First is her wrap around hood. It’s a plastic shell piece that flows around her head and rests on her shoulders nicely. This is solid beyond not being able to turn her head within the hood. I do wish Hasbro included a cloth scarf piece for the hood down look.

Next up is her blaster. It’s a small gun yet still has a good amount of detail with silver and black paint applications.

Worth it? I waited this series out in hopes of getting them for clearance/deep discount like way too many figures I bought for full price in 2021 only to see them for half off by the end of the year.

I got Jyn for $9 at GameStop, which is a great price for such a strong figure. You can get her now for $14 from Amazon.

Rating: 8 out of 10

With better range in her elbow and a more consistent skin tone color, Jyn would be a standout. She’s still a fun figure though I wouldn’t mind a more articulated upgrade.

Where to get it? All of the Rogue One figures are going to be hard to find at retail save for GameStop. Jyn is still available at Amazon.
