Star Wars The Black Series Magistrate Greef Karga review

By the second season of The Mandalorian, fortune was smiling on some characters, specifically Greef Karga. After falling out with the bounty hunter guild. Greef got a new gig as the Magistrate for Nevarro. In this new role, Greef Karga has held down his pal Mando with some timely aid as well as a sanctuary come Season 3.

Mandalorian’s second season was one of my favorite Disney+ so far and not just because of the ending, which certainly helped boost its stock for me. As a result, I’m pretty much obligated to get every figure from Season 2. Course, I’ll be short one Cara Dune, but at least I’ve got my Magistrate Greef Karga figure.

I’d delayed on grabbing him, but finally added him to the collection. Let’s see if the newer, more official Greef brings a little class to my Mandalorian display.

Packaging: There are zero surprises with the packaging at this point — it’s got a nice open window showing off the figure and accessories. He’s got a great drawing that captures his more laid-back demeanor.

Greef Karga is No. 24 in the Mandalorian series if you needed any more hints how focused on the series Hasbro has become.

As always, the bio does a nice job of setting the scene for Greef’s role at this point in the Star Wars saga.

Likeness:  I was pleasantly surprised to see that Hasbro put in the work for a new head sculpt for Greef since the original Season 1 sculpt was pretty good.

This time the hairline is accurate to the Season 2 look and his beard is sculpted on instead of being left up to the paint. That’s appreciated.

Greef likes the robed look. His magistrate garment is a bit more traditional than his guild look though more complex. There’s a sculpted pattern on both sides of the robe.

The chain connecting the clasps is not just a thin strip of plastic — it also has smaller detailed elements, which is a great touch.

Hasbro reused the arms and legs from the previous figure, but the tunic and overlay are new pieces. That’s enough to distinguish this figure from the Season 1 look.

As much as I liked the Carl Weathers likeness with the first figure, this one is even stronger. This is impressive work from Hasbro’s sculpting team.

MORE:

Paint:  Greef Karga has a muted color palette and tends to go with subtle tones like this attire. I feel like the complaints are being super picky and more a matter of color interpretation than significant problems. It seems like the red could be a touch darker red like a wine shade as opposed to the red orange used for the figure.

Hasbro went with a salt and pepper look for the goatee section of the beard. That’s true for the section around his cheeks, but the main portion framing his mouth is decidedly white. That’s the biggest issue with the paintwork. The left clasp has some gold overspray, but it’s more of a looking for a problem than it being obvious.

star wars the black series magistrate greef karga review - scale with cara dune and mandalorian

Scale: Greef is taller than Mando and Cara of the Mandalorian Big Three standing about half a head taller than Mando. He’s not as tall as he should be compared to Mando, but scales properly with Cara.

Articulation:  There are some obvious restrictions with Greef Karga on this front — namely the lack of a torso articulation point — but this version is just as solid a figure to pose as the original figure.

That model had sneaky solid articulation and was fine pulling off the poses Greef did in the series. He wasn’t brawling with anyone and was just aiming his blaster, which is no problem here.

His cape/cloak does tend to bunch up when raising his shoulders too high, which is annoying though it’s not like Greef was raising his arms above his head very often.

Like the first figure, his joints are also nice and tight, which is helpful since Greef is one of the thicker figures in The Mandalorian sub-line.

Magistrate Greef Karga has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • elbow
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • hips
  • thighs
  • knees (double jointed)
  • ankles

Accessories:  Greef Karga was getting too old for this stuff back in the first season and is even less interested in battles come Season 2, but he’s not afraid to mix it up as needed.

He’s got a steady aim and swaps his double blasters for a single blaster with a scope attachment. The detail is as precise as I’ve come to expect for the exceptional weapons work from Hasbro.

Still, one lone accessory feels sparse for Greef.

Worth it?  Regularly, Greef Karga is the new standard price of $24.99, but my affiliate Entertainment Earth has him now for $13.99. That’s a very solid price for a Black Series figure.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Greef gets another excellent figure though the lack of accessories does hit the value somewhat and the inaccurate beard paint job is a bit weird.
