Star Wars The Black Series K-2SO review – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
It’s hard for droids to crack into fan favorite status beyond C-3PO and R2-D2. Sure every so often there’s a Chopper or a BB-8, but breaking through is tough. That’s what made K-2SO so memorable.
He wasn’t designed to be cute and sell a lot of plush dolls. Cassian Andor’s converted Imperial security droid was matter of fact, rude and all around unpleasant thanks to his lack of emotions and deadpan delivery. And somehow that cracked the code and Star Wars fans consider K2 one of their more beloved droids.
Let’s see if I like this figure beyond Cassian telling me I had to.
Packaging: I love that the Black Series uses a different accent color for each film/series. Rogue One has a duck egg blue shade. K2 is No. 3 in the Rogue One lineup right behind Jyn Erso and Cassian. As always, the mural image on the side looks incredible.
K2’s bio goes with the same spoiler-free approach of the rest of this wave simply providing a basic background without the larger context of his fate in Rogue One.
Likeness: K-2SO has one of the more unique droid designs. He’s all arms and legs with elongated limbs with a eggshell-like upper torso. The Empire knows how to make a creepy looking droid. That’s best illustrated by that unnerving head sculpt with the deep sunken in eyes.
His lanky appearance really helps to make him stand out as well.

Paint: K-2SO isn’t getting touched up at the Imperial body shop and Cassian doesn’t have time to keep him looking pristine.
K2 has some nice silver scuff marks to show he’s seen some damage over the years. There’s some nice detailing with the silver joints and gold lining around the arms and hips. And the Imperial logo on his arms is nice and clean as well.
Scale: Part of the Imperial Security Guard setup was to be towering and intimidating. K-2SO looks down on everyone and is scaled appropriately for how he appeared in Rogue One.
Articulation: K-2SO was not a fast-moving droid, he lumbered around a bit and methodically grabbed Stormtroopers and other Imperial officers. He’s about throttling and raising Stormtroopers above his head.
K-2 has stellar articulation that allows him to hit some pretty fun and unique poses. I’d need some digital trickery to actually get him hoisting another figure in the air thanks to his biggest challenge — standing.
It’s not a matter of getting too wild with the poses. K-2 will stand just fine and then just randomly topple over even if you’ve got him in the most basic, stable pose. The problem is those accurate elongated legs and top-heavy eggshell torso.
I was curious to see if anyone else had problems with his balance and this is a widespread problem with solutions of varying degrees of success.
It’s a shame that Hasbro still can’t figure out a means to make accurate looking droids without having them so consistently being domino shelf destroyer risks.
K-2SO has:
- neck
- ball-jointed shoulders
- elbow (with swivel)
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso
- hips
- thighs
- knees (double jointed)
- ankles
Accessories: K-2SO didn’t come with any accessories, which is disappointing. If nothing else he should come with a Stormtrooper blaster to simulate his final scene when he’s trying to hold the Stormtroopers at bay while Cassian and Jyn get the Death Star plans.
Worth it? I held off on getting the Rogie One figures hoping for a sale. That paid off and I was able to get K-2SO for $12. K-2SO isn’t a bad value at $20 but getting him for any less is a great deal.
Rating: 8.5 out of 10
Aesthetically, K-2SO is one of my favorite recent Black Series figures. It’s just the constant battle to keep him standing is a major bummer.
Where to get it? All of the Rogue One figures are going to be hard to find at retail save for GameStop. K-2SO is still available at Amazon.
