DC Comics reviews 10/17/23 – Batman Superman World’s Finest #20, Superman #7
Green Lantern War Journal #2
Two issues in and it already feels like Green Lantern War Journal is one of the few books making good on the promise of the Dawn of DC. With fresh ideas, a new status quo and an interesting take, this is one of the more enjoyable new titles from DC.
Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson has established a strong dynamic with John and his mother as well as a potential new stomping grounds in Metropolis aligned with Steel. Not that every hero needs to be on Superman’s turf, but John and John Henry working together is an exciting development. Johnson also has set up a frightening and scary threat in the Revenant Queen. This isn’t a retread of so many villains from the past and feels like a legit credible villain for John.
Montos’ art has a sketch-style visual that is somewhat rough and raw, but it works for this take on John. The colors from Alex Guimaraes is also very well executed. They’re not overly bright but subdued enough to complement Montos’ style.
While a Green Lantern without a ring still is an odd development, John Stewart’s run has been exactly the kind of fresh idea this new era of DC needs. This creative team is locked in and hopefully this is a title with a very bright future ahead.
