DC Comics reviews 10/24/23 – Wonder Woman #2, Green Arrow #5, The Flash #2

Detective Comics #1075

Gotham Nocturne has reached its second act, but it doesn’t feel like the arc is progressing to any measurable degree.

Batman is still fighting through the Azmer making him vulnerable to the Orgham gang. Writer Ram V injects an intriguing element that had some potential with a competent Gotham police detective, but disappointingly eliminates it just as quickly. Ram V’s Batman was compelling earlier in the arc due to having some vulnerability, but the arc has veered too far on the other direction. Lately, Batman has largely just come off as beaten down and broken in every title.

Artwork from Francesco Francavilla is ok. Fancavilla’s style is better suited for more lighthearted and basic Gotham stories. At this stage in the arc, the art needs a grittier, more detailed presentation.

The book is also hurting now as it’s so far removed from the events playing out in the rest of the Batman titles with the Batman/Catwoman Gotham War arc. Whether that’s a bad thing is up for debate. It’s just weird for such a major storyline occurring after Gotham Nocturne started and at this rate will end before this is over.
