The Equalizer 3 4K Blu-Ray review
The Equalizer trilogy has been a rewarding experience for fans happy to embrace a stoic Denzel Washington, who largely lays down his endless charisma and leading man charm to be a vicious, calculating killing machine. This marks Washington’s fifth collaboration with director Antoine Fuqua, who has helmed each installment of the series so far. Sony Pictures provided a copy of the Best Buy exclusive Steelbook version of The Equalizer 3 4K Blu-Ray for review.
Review:
Robert McCall (Washington) travels to Italy for a mission that ends in a bloodbath. He’s unprepared for a sneak attack that leads him to a peaceful small village with a tight-knit community. Only problem is the local mafia is keeping everyone under their thumb. To enjoy this new quaint life, McCall has to take the law into his own hands again and truly balance the scales of justice.

Equalizer 3 4K Video Review:
Add this gorgeous transfer to your reference quality show-off collection. Details are stunning and a noticeable upgrade from an already impressive Blu-Ray transfer. Blacks are dark without sacrificing detail. Skin tones are sharp picking up age lines on seasoned performers like Washington and Remo Girone. Fuqua intentionally muted the colors to a degree. This isn’t a touristy view of Italy, but one mired in corruption and casting a dark shadow over and otherwise happy community.
Sony presentations tend to be at a high level and the 2160p Ultra High-Definition transfer is stunning and well worth investing in for the 4K option.
Equalizer 3 4K Audio Review:
With plentiful explosions and ambient noises, this is a tremendous audio experience thanks to the Atmos Dolby True HD 7.1 soundtrack. As much of the film takes place in crowded environments, the track offers excellent prioritization, so the main dialogue takes precedence. Background noises are present but aren’t competing with main dialogue. Washington doesn’t get over the top with an abundance of yelling scenes, yet his lower cadence is picked up cleanly.
Audiophiles will have a lot to love with this audio track.

The special features are solid, if not especially lengthy. The most engaging, perhaps not that surprisingly are the Washington-focused segments such as the celebration of his partnership with Fuqua. The other spotlights the return of the big screen of Washington and his Man on Fire co-star Dakota Fanning.
With so many intricate shots and a few clear nods to The Godfather, a commentary track with Fuqua and Washington would have been fascinating to explore their creative process.
Steel book
The steel book itself is well done with a unique design featuring McCall on the front, the Italian flag and some burning buildings while the back features a mix of blood and wine. It’s a fitting combination for the film.
Disc presentation is also nice with strong tabs that lock them in place and easy access to remove your preference.
Overall Rating:
This is an elite 4K offering and one fans of the film will love taking in repeatedly with the crisp video presentation and masterful audio track.
