DC Comics reviews 11/28/23 – Titans: Beast World #1, Green Arrow #6

The Flash #3

The Flash could be a fun superhero title with some quirky elements, but writer Si Spurrier seems intent on making his run a Doom Patrol series that happens to feature Wally West. There’s just too many weird ideas, mumbo jumbo and otherwise inaccessible dialogue to make for a cohesive and entertaining read. The big problem is Spurrier shows he can just have fun. Wally’s interaction with Mr. Terrific, Max Mercury and Impulse reveal Spurrier would have no problem doing a more “traditional” take.

To some degree it’s commendable that Spurrier wants to do something different, but it’s so far away from the norm that it’s not quite working. Mike Deodato Jr. really seems inspired by Spurrier coming up with panels and pages that tap into his creativity in a way that work on The Hulk and Dark Avengers failed to accomplish. Deodato is doing some fantastic work, but like the script it’s too much all at once.

Colorist Trish Mulvihill is also providing some stellar work with the blends and gradients to match the anything goes nature of the script and art. Hassan Otsmaen-Elhaou’s lettering is also captivating.

The Flash reads like a comic you need a metaphysics degree to enjoy, which makes a book about the fastest man alive feel increasingly slow and boring.
