DC Comics reviews 12/12/23 – Green Lantern #6, Superman Lost #9

No matter how much DC tries to push this new direction for the title, it’s facing an uphill battle matching the consistent quality of writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s run. From the extended, but epic Warworld saga to the return to Earth run, Johnson has delivered month after month. The home stretch of the New World arc finds Superman seeking unusual help from Constantine to track down Otho-Ra who’s in the clutches of Sister Shadow.

Johnson has Constantine’s voice down strongly. That’s been a welcome surprise of the title. How easily Johnson gets the personality of various characters and perfectly blends them with Superman. The art, a team effort from Eddy Barrows, Fico Ossio & Eber Ferreira, Joe Prado and Jonas Trindade is decent though struggles from the shift in artists.

Sister Shadow is an intriguing villain for Superman and one that hopefully won’t be forgotten once Johnson is gone. The cliffhanger finds two more heroes ready to join the cause for the story that culminates later this month in the Action Comics 2023 Annual. There’s some negligible secondary stories that play out like filler but the main attraction makes this worth checking out.
