MAFEX Batman: Hush Nightwing review
As the Titans in the DC Comics Universe are now the main hero squad instead of the Justice League, it’s kinda fitting to get the MAFEX Batman Hush version of Nightwing in now. This has been a figure I’ve been anticipating for a while now and the early reports were he is a figure of the year candidate.
I’ve been a big fan of Nightwing for decades now whether on his own, hanging with his fellow Robins, helping out Batman or leading the Titans. I’ve got high expectations for this figure so let’s see if MAFEX can properly walk this tightrope to deliver an amazing figure.
Packaging: MAFEX is keeping the look consistent with the blue greys of the trade and a nice portrait of the figure at the bottom. It’s simple, but it looks classy and fits in with the tone of Hush.
The window is big enough to see most of the accessories. This is a line that doesn’t have to have window packaging since it’s rare that a comic book store would have more than one in stop to choose between the better paint jobs.
I do wish this line included bios just because I think that’s such an underrated aspect of figure packaging.
Likeness: The Hush line is MAFEX’s attempt to convey Jim Lee’s art style to figure form. For the most part the designs and sculpts have matched the source material though there’s been some exceptions notably Huntress’ attire. Lee drew Nightwing very lithe yet still formidable enough to handle his own in a fight.
One of the signature aspects of Lee’s Nightwing is the wild, disheveled hair, which MAFEX nailed. Nightwing’s default head has a fantastic head sculpt with a neutral expression that can be “read” with several emotions.
This is a sleek outfit so there’s not a lot of necessary sculpted detail, but MAFEX didn’t skimp on the essential details right down to the three circles on the boot soles.
That’s nice attention to detail.

Paint: To preserve that comic book visual, Nightwing’s hair is a mix of black and blue. That’s a nice touch and really gives the figure that stepped out of the comic book visual.
The shade of blue MAFEX went with is bright and bold without being the walking target of red and yellow like the Robin gear.
Paintwork is clean along the mask and the shoulder tips and V along his chest.
Scale: At this point in his history, Nightwing is a fully grown adult but he’s still shorter than his mentor, Batman, so they definitely shouldn’t be looking eye to eye with each other.
Articulation: Nightwing might be the most acrobatic, agile character in the DCU so his figure needs to be able to hit all kinds of crazy poses.
Thankfully the MAFEX articulation scheme is up to the task.
With a little patience, you can get flips, side kicks, handstands, etc. to show off Nightwing’s agility.
Hush Nightwing has:
- neck
- ball-jointed shoulders
- elbow
- wrist
- wrist hinge
- torso
- hip
- knee (double-jointed)
- ankle
Accessories: MAFEX doesn’t shortchange collectors with accessories. This is part of what you’re paying for with the price, but it rarely feels like I’m not getting my money’s worth.
First up, Hush Nightwing has his signature escrima sticks. These are nice and solid, actually looking capable of inflicting some harm instead of the limp plastic some companies use for the sticks.
There’s also a swappable hand twirling sticks option in a very cool take on Nightwing taunting his opponents before leaping into battle.
In another use of the escrima sticks, we’ve got the wire pool option, which allowed Nightwing to swing around like a grapple line. It’s made out of a pliable, poseable wire so you can channel Scott McDaniel’s take on it.
Depending on your posing preference, there’s a swappable back panel with clamps for the escrima sticks.
This is similar to the DC Classics version, but if you prefer the sleeker version you can swap this out. That’s a nice feature.
To aid in posing, Nightwing has three alternate hand sculpts.
Finally, Nightwing has an alternate portrait with a fierce, gritted teeth expression.
Worth it? You can get Hush Nightwing for just a little over $100.
I was able to get him for under $80, which is still a lot for a 6-inch figure, but it’s hard to gripe about a figure of this immense quality.
Rating: 10 out of 10
It’s hard to knock a figure where everything comes together so smoothly and is this much fun. Nightwing stands out as one of the best figures of 2023.
