DC Comics reviews 1/30/24 – Titans Beast World #6, Batman Superman World’s Finest 2024 Annual #1

Titans Beast World #6

Beast World wraps with a largely satisfying conclusion. Writer Tom Taylor has a solid track record of sticking the landing to these large-scale events. This was unique as typically he’s writing out of continuity epics (Dark Knights of Steel, DCeased #paid links on Amazon) that can end when he’s done telling the story.

With Beast World, the mostly Titans-focused event wraps by further establishing the team as DC’s top squad while pushing the usual major players — Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Shazam, Mr. Terrific, etc. — in an assisting capacity.

The Titans determine a way to remove the spores from the infected, but they need a daring plan to pull it off. All while Raven’s dealing with the dark portion of her soul now running around as Dr. Hate. That wasn’t a random twist as Taylor set it up, but a corrupted Raven doesn’t seem like the freshest idea.

Beast World’s finale did allow for the Titans to all get big moments in the spotlight. Given that Jon Kent’s book ended and Taylor’s clear love of writing the character, it’s surprising Beast World #6 didn’t end with this version of Superman joining the Titans.

While multiple artists on one issue has become tiresome, the trio of Ivan Reis, Lucas Meyer and Eduardo Panscia (with inkers Danny Miki and Julio Ferreira) deliver a visually cohesive story with some dynamic pages. Brad Anderson and Romulo Fajardo Jr.’s color work is consistently strong.

Taylor doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of Peacemaker, writing him to be a complete doofus a la James Gunn’s take on the character in his series. Fortunately, Amanda Waller is written as far more of a threat as she continues her efforts to seize power in the DCU.

Beast World has a more successful run than many recent DC events. With a few dangling plot threads, it felt more like an interlude for the 2024 rollout of Titans’ stories. That’s not a bad approach though some might find it a fully realized and complete story as a result.
