Power Rangers Lightning Collection Dino Fury Red Ranger review

It’s been a minute since I’ve been invested in Power Rangers, but I’ve been a fan of the Lightning Collection line and didn’t want to stop after completing the Mighty Morphin crew.  Instead, I’ve decided to keep rolling with the line to create my own unique team of Power Rangers from various iterations. Today, I’m taking a look at the Dino Fury Red Ranger.

This probably won’t be as critical a review as some Power Ranger devotees. Dino Fury Red Ranger just looked cool and since he was at Ross, I decided it was a great time to start my offshoot Power Rangers squad.

Packaging:  I got the special Power Pop packaging, which provides a bit more dynamic presentation than some of the other subsets. Zaytor has a nice big side portrait showing off his helmet and a smaller action shot of him on the move.

It’s a very catchy design after some very boring setups in the Lightning Collection line.

The back is still basic — there’s no bio — but there’s a bit more design elements added.

Likeness:  Dino Fury Red Ranger aka Zaytor has a sleek design. The helmet is stylized like a Tyrannosaurs Rex. There’s some impressive detailing in the helmet sculpt. The “ear/mouth” section should stick out some as opposed to laying flat against the helmet.

It also seems like the helmet could sit up higher on the neck to show more of the Nehru collar.  The LC team did nice work with the detailing on the bracelets, belt, shin and ankle armor.

Dino Fury Red Ranger’s wrist-mounted morpher also has some impressive, detailed sculpting.

Scale:  Scale doesn’t matter that much to me with Zaytor for now at least. He’s about the average size for a Ranger in the line.

MORE:

Paint:  Paintwork is traditionally solid with this line. Dino Fury Red Ranger is fairly clean. I had to look very closely to find some missing paint in the finer details of the helmet. I do dig the vibrant green eyes in the helmet.

The linework with the chest logo is expertly done considering the faint color combination of silver and white coming up on black and red.

Articulation:  One of my favorite aspects of the Lightning Collection line is the very smooth articulation making for some of the easiest to pose figures in this scale. He’s got great range to do kicks and deep sword stances.

I’m not surprised at his poseability and it’s nice to see a line with such well-engineered articulation and movement.

  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • waist
  • hip
  • knee (double-jointed)
  • ankle

Accessories:  Like most Lightning Collection figures, Dino Fury Red Ranger comes with a nice allotment of accessories.

First up is the unmasked head sculpt. The likeness to actor Russell Curry is solid.

It’s not the best Hasbro has done — the nose is slightly too narrow and the hair is a bit too light — but you don’t have to squint to see it either.

Next up are the swappable hands. There’s a left hand fist and a taunting style right hand.

He comes with the Chromafury Saber. The blade is missing the red core, which is a weird omission from the LC line.

The hilt is also missing some detail though the gold portion and red eye were included.  There’s also a translucent light blue lightning bolt to attach to the saber.

Worth it?  I was able to get Dino Fury Red Ranger for $5.99 at Ross. Short of free that’s a pretty tough price point to beat for quality Power Rangers figures. Even if you pay around the $30 to $22 price point, I don’t think he’s a bad value.

Rating:  9.5 out of 10

The Chromafury Saber’s lack of detail was the biggest negative here for an otherwise really exceptional figure and a terrific addition to my galaxy spanning nomad Power Rangers.
