Marvel Legends Clea review – BAF Mindless One wave

Clea is an essential Doctor Strange supporting character. It seems a little weird it’s taken this long to get a Marvel Legends figure of her. Better late than never though and she’s a welcome inclusion in this kind of catch-all Marvel Knights wave.

Let’s see if Clea summons up plenty of goodwill or if the magic is gone with this first time in the line figure.

Packaging:  We’ve now entered back into the plastic window era all over again. That’s incredibly helpful in finding the best paint job for a figure and making sure all the accessories are intact. This isn’t a retail wave so it only helps if your local comic book store or GameStop had them in stock.

For this Marvel Knights packaging, we get a gradient orange/red accent color. The sides sport comic book artwork once again with the BAF part breakdown on the back of the packaging.

Making an overdue return as well is the small bio write-ups for the characters. This one explains Clea’s look and her allies, which is always welcome.

Likeness:  Clea’s had numerous variations of this attire over the years. I don’t know if she has a signature costume.

The figure’s attire is what she wore starting around Fearless Defenders. Hasbro’s ML team can be rightfully accused at times with going with the most bizarre costume choice, but this is a reasonable catch all kind of costume selection for Clea.

It’s got shoulder pads, with sculpted lines and a deep V-cut. She’s got high flared gloves and a sash belt.

Of course, my favorite part is the head sculpt. Clea has an attractive face with a thoughtful expression and an exquisite hair sculpt. It’s some of the best hair sculpt work I can remember on a Marvel Legends figure in a while.

Paint:  Clea is a color loyalist, typically sticking to some variations of magenta, purple, pink and black in her costumes. The magenta looks striking against the black and purple.

The tampo on her legs is mostly clean. Inconsistencies arise more from the purple needing another application to stand out better against the black.

Once again, the head sculpt is the winner with an excellent paintjob on her face specifically with the makeup. The eye shadow and blush are just faint enough to register without being too obnoxious.

The ivory white used for her hair is a good choice as it catches the light in a way to provide some illusions of a wash to bring out more detail.

Scale:  Clea doesn’t typically interact with many characters besides Doctor Strange. She’s not towering over him thankfully and they match up height-wise accurately from the comics.

Articulation: Hasbro’s ML team introduced the Shriek mold with far more articulation for the female figures than previous molds. That buck has been in existence long enough that it’s disappointing when Hasbro reuses older, less articulated molds like this for Clea.

She lacks both the double-jointed elbows and the bicep point. That’s very frustrating for a gesturing magic user like Clea.

She does sport a solid mid-torso joint, which has a good side to side and back and forth range. Her hair is sculpted in a manner that it doesn’t interfere with left to right poses, but it does impair tilting movements.

Clea has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • elbow
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • upper torso
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee (double-jointed)
  • ankle

Accessories: Clea comes with a decent amount of accessories. The window definitely looks full compared to some offerings with just swappable fists.

But since I mentioned them, Clea gets a pair of swappable fists.

Additionally, she’s got the smaller energy trails Hasbro frequently likes to use with Scarlet Witch. This time they’re cast in a translucent light purple.

Finally, she’s got the right arm and swappable right fist of the Build-A-Figure Mindless One.

Worth it?  I was able to take advantage of a sale at my local comic book store, Third Eye Comics, which had Clea as part of a 50% off Black Friday sale. That was an easy purchase and she was well worth $12.

She’s a solid figure and has enough accessories and parts to a larger size BAF to justify the regular $25 even without the bicep cut.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Clea looks great with colors that pop and a fantastic head sculpt. She’s held back thanks to the limited arm articulation and minimal accessories.
