Image Comics reviews 3/13/24 – Transformers #6
Adventureman: Ghost Lights #2
This issue was a fun. It has that classic pulp hero vibe with over-the-top villains who are menacing, but not psychopath serial killers. In the best way possible, this is the kind of comic that the entire family can enjoy.
For much of this issue, writer Matt Fraction explained how this new crop of adventurers can immediately become so proficient in the overarching skills and memories of previous incarnations. It’s lame dudes questioning a “plot hole” protection and while it does take some time to explain is sadly likely necessary.
Claire has to contend with The Ghost Gang while the rest of her friends take the final steps necessary to help her. It’s a simple, Indiana Jones style premise but it works since it’s not overly complicated.
The cast is big, but they’re fun characters with dialogue that showcases various personalities. Fraction doesn’t have to force or try hard to make the characters entertaining. He just writes them incredibly likable and engaging.
Art provided by Terry and Rachel Dodson is a perfect match for the lighter, classic sensibilities of the story. Clayton Cowles navigates the dialogue and ghost chatter wonderfully.
This is exactly the kind of comic folks who say there’s no entertaining adventure books on the stands can check out and immediately get swept away. Ghost Lights has plenty of life and the fun is just getting started.
