DC Comics reviews 3/19/24 – Nightwing #112, JSA #9, Superman #12
Batman’89 Echoes #2
Batman’89 keeps on giving with the second issue of Echoes. This truly feels like reading the continuing saga of the Tim Burton Batman films. Bruce Wayne is posing as the dangerous Firefly. That allows him access into Arkham Asylum under the watch of Jonathan Crane, who seems eager his own costumed alter ego.
Alfred meets up with Batman’s other ally, Robin, who has news on Batman’s condition. It’s nice to see writer Sam Hamm continuing to build on the new lore he’s creating. Dr. Harleen Quinzel is trying to get an interview with Firefly while starting to go down a familiar path. Hamm isn’t letting The Joker’s death ruin the potential fun of Harley Quinn in this movie universe.
Joe Quinones’ art continues to impress with the superb likenesses to the established Batman actors and Madonna as Harley. Colorist Leonardo Ito helps provide a strong mood for the series. It’s not bathed in darkness, but there’s not many pockets of sunshine and cheery backdrops.
Echoes #2 keeps the momentum of this Batman ’89 sequel rolling with a solid mystery.
