DC Comics reviews 3/19/24 – Nightwing #112, JSA #9, Superman #12
Justice Society of America #9
It’s a risky proposition getting too invested in the Justice Society of America knowing that Geoff Johns is going to be departing the title and DC Comics soon. Especially when the book is bound to be disappointing post-Johns if anyone but Robert Venditti or Jeremy Adams gets handed the keys to the book.
Still, Johns is too engaging a writer to avoid attachment. JSA #9 finds the team continuing their villain rehabilitation efforts. A team tracks down The Harlequinn’s Son, who isn’t interested in turning over a new leaf. Quiz Kid challenges Mr. Terrific to do more for the little guy. This makes this issue light on actual supervillain action. It’s a talk heavy installment that’s largely washed away since Johns is able to make the larger cast shine with distinct voices.
Mikel Janin’s artwork is gorgeous as ever. His style lends itself well to dialogue-intense stories. Janin doesn’t have a problem with action sequences, but he’s got a knack for making conversations look more dramatic and intense than in other hands. Jordie Bellaire’s color work remains at an elite level while letterer Rob Leigh keeps the conversations easy to follow.
What this issue lacks in action, it delivers with strong character beats and an unexpected cliffhanger.
