Power Rangers Lightning Collection Wild Force Putrid review

Wild Force Putrid is another addition to the Lightning Collection that was “supposed” to end as soon as I completed the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. Somehow my collection has expanded into three shelf territory.

Putrid is another character I know very little about beyond he looks cool. And he was on clearance. That’s almost always good enough for me.

Let’s see if this Wild Force villain leaves me hyped or just wondering what’s that awful smell.

Packaging:  Save the Cobra Kai crossover figures, this is the first basic Power Rangers-specific character I’ve grabbed with the enclosed packaging. Since the Power Rangers basic setup was so boring this is actually more exciting.

The light green accents and the splash of grey accents offers a nice visual pop. On the left side we get a larger portrait of Putrid.

Over on the back, a lightning bolt separates the render (complete with height stats) and accessories. The lower portion features Putrid with his electrified club. It’s really a lot more interesting package setup than the old setup.

Likeness:  The Putrids have a pretty simple outfit save the helmet. It’s more of a shell covering the front of the face. On the other side of the head, there’s a wrinkled pink/purple mask.

I love the horn in the center and the deep-set eyes and mouth, which gives Putrid a very strong luchadore vibe.

The overall body suit is fine. Putrid’s wavy lines on the costume are wrapped around his body. I get Hasbro’s Power Rangers team not wanting to actually sculpt the lines as separate pieces, but it does make it look a little cheaper.

Putrid’s wrist bands are sculpted as are the ankle bands. The belt has some good detailing with the unique circular buckle, studs on the sides and leathery material in the back.

Scale:  Like the standard Puttys, Putrid is an average height — no taller or shorter than the basic male Power Ranger.

MORE:

Paint:  Putrid has a simple paint scheme. From the reference photos, it seemed like Hasbro should have gone with a darker shade of grey. Ditto for the pink-purple eyes, mouth and mask.

The eyes seem to have some caked-up paint in the top portion of the helmet. It’s uniform enough that it doesn’t look sloppy.

Articulation:  Like most Power Rangers figures, Putrid have very smooth articulation making for a really fun army builder to pose.

The butterfly shoulders aid with weapon holding and hitting some more dynamic stances. The torso has a good rocking joint, which allows for strong side to side and forward/backward movement.

I really dig that Putrid can hit the signature squat move they do en masse. That’s pretty fun.

Wild Force Putrid has:

  • neck
  • shoulders
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • waist
  • hip
  • knee (double-jointed)
  • ankle

Accessories:  Putrid has the regular, decent number of accessories from the Lightning Collection line.

He has swappable hands with a grasping right hand and a chopping left hand.

Putrid gets his main weapon — a spiked club. The spikes are arranged in asymmetrical rows to give them a more dangerous visual. The gold paint in the rows is applied fairly clean with some of the edges not lining up all that precisely.

Finally, he’s got a translucent light purple energy effect. This is wider than the usual effect piece and seems like it could work well for other lines. It slips around the club well enough and doesn’t slide down due to the spikes.

Worth it?  I didn’t grab Putrid from Ross, which basically gives away Power Rangers figures. Target clearanced him out and I got him for $7.99, which is still a great price for a normally $25 figure.

Rating:  9.5 out of 10

Where to get it?   I found Putrid at Target, but he’s currently sold out on Target.com. You can also snag him from Amazon.
