Green Lantern #10

Hal Jordan has returned to Oa only to find things are much different than he remembers. Jo warns him that a small resistance force has been hiding in the shadows to avoid detection by the United Planets’ Ring Hunters. If discovered, a ring bearer’s ring loses its power, and they are imprisoned. That sounds like enough to keep Hal in observing mode, but there’s only so much he can stand after seeing the condition of some of his allies.

As usual, writer Jeremy Adams doesn’t shy away from incorporating aspects of previous creative runs on a title. This is the first time where Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz in particular get a spotlight beyond simply being background characters.  Adams always does his homework in making sure the characters sound consistent with previous portrayals. With a mix of various Lanterns, Adams has a strong command of their voices easily handling the new team dynamics of the title.

Xermánico and Amancy Nahuelpan handle the art duties this issue. It seems a little weird to have two artists on an issue especially when the main story is less than a standard issue. Xermánico and Nahuelpan’s styles are similar enough that the switch is noticeable but isn’t jarring. Romulo Fajardo Jr.’s color work continues to be stellar with terrific lighting and highlighting of constructs.  This arc is already shaping up to be a memorable one on this fantastic run with a cliffhanger that wonderfully keeps readers on the hook.

Hal learning more about what’s happening on Oa is a great story and all, but really all that needed to be said about this issue is Kevin Maguire tackles the Guy Gardner secondary story.

Maguire helped establish his career drawing Gardner so this was a welcome reunion. Guy is tasked by the new Lantern Council with bringing in Lobo. Naturally, a chance for a little payback in the name of using his authority is enough to get Guy hyped. But Lobo isn’t exactly hiding as he’s under a mask as part of the intergalactic wrestling promotion starring Omega-Bam-Man. OBM last appeared in one of Adams’ home stretch Flash issues.

Maguire’s art remains superb with the best command of expressive characters. Rosemary Cheetham’s strong coloring helps to convey the brighter, lighthearted tone of this story as well.

Green Lantern is one of DC’s showcase titles right now. You might want to get the previous issue, but Green Lantern #10 is a worthwhile jumping on point for readers who keep hearing about the quality of the title. It’s very well-earned.
