Power Rangers Lightning Collection Green Ranger and Mighty Morphin Putty review

I got this two-pack a while ago and have taken forever to finally get around to reviewing it. Then I felt weird about breaking it out after Jason David Frank’s death. It felt like now was the right time to take a look at this Green Ranger vs. Putty two-pack.

From his introduction, Green Ranger was such a cool addition to the Power Rangers mythos and he quickly became — like for most Power Rangers fans — one of my favorites. I helped that his attire was a bit different from the others and Tommy came off a lot cooler than some of the other Rangers. Typically, I’m not a fan of including an army builder in a two-pack, but Hasbro already released a dedicated Putty army builder set so this was just an opportunity to add to the Putty army.

Let’s break down this set and see if I’m ready to go go or if this one wasn’t worth tracking down.

Packaging: This packaging is basically an expanded version of the regular set with a drawing of both characters on either side and a wide window showing off both figures.

The back always feels like an afterthought with just one image of the two characters facing off. This line really would benefit from a bio and photos from the TV series to show the reference material.

Likeness:  The Green Ranger mostly uses the Red/Black Ranger body with some key distinctions.

Naturally, the dragon helmet is unique. I love the precise detail paid to the helmet and getting all those tiny elements accurate. From the dragon teeth to the jewel in the center all the details are intact.

Green Ranger gets an additional armored Dragon Shield chest plate. This wraps around his shoulders to make for a snug fit. It also has some terrific detailing with the dragon teeth on the armor shoulders sculpted as well as the tiny points within the centerpiece.

He also has arm bands and his belt features his dragon logo. To distinguish him from the other Rangers, his holster is on his right hip and not the left hip.

The Putty is the exact same figure as the Putty Patrollers pack. I still love that amazing head sculpt with the sunken eyes, furrowed brow and upturned mouth. Putty has a creepy old school horror creature vibe toned down by the light grey color scheme. Additionally, the sculpted granite arms are very impressive.

Scale:  Tommy should be the tallest of all the Power Rangers. With every subsequent MMPR it’s seemed like the scale has gotten a little wonkier. He’s shorter than ideal, but he’s taller than the other Rangers.

The Putty Patrollers don’t need to be towering giants so standing at average height is just fine.

Paint:  I really haven’t had any issues with paint work on any Power Rangers figures, so it was a little surprising that Green Ranger had a few. The gold trim on his gloves and boots is faint and the underneath green bleeds through constantly.

That’s the most issues of any of the 10+ Power Rangers figures I’ve purchased so far.

The Putty is clean with no problems at all. It helps that the base grey is light enough to help make the blacks and darker greys stand out. Most of the precise work is with the red eyes and the black of the Putty’s mouth.

Articulation:  Both the Green Ranger and Putty Patroller have the same easy to pose, fluid articulation as the rest of the line even with Tommy’s chest armor piece.

The articulation isn’t a surprise at this point and it’s nice to see it be so consistent from release to release.

Accessories:  Green Ranger comes with his dragon dagger.

I remain impressed at the detail on these smaller weapons from the sculpted elements like the three knobs on the side, the slots in the hilt, the blade within the blade in the dagger and the dragon logo.

He also has the Sword of Darkness. This also has fantastic detailing with carvings in the blade and intricate cuts throughout.

The paintwork is superb with the blacks and reds against the white hilt and silver blade.

Additionally, Tommy has a swappable right hand and a green energy effect piece. Finally, he’s got the same helmetless head from the White Ranger figure.

The Putty Patroller has the same accessories as before with the mace and blade attachments that fit on either hand. Instead of two blast effects, there’s just one blue one that can attach to the blade.

Worth it? The set was originally $40, the same price as two figures, which is fine. No issues with this price point for these figures.

Rating:  9.7 out of 10

It’s nice to have a complete crew of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and getting an extra army builder in the mix as well was a welcome touch. Tommy’s paint isn’t up to the norm, but this is an outstanding set.
