Marvel Legends Ultron review – BAF Cassie Lang wave

It’s wild how for so long we were clamoring for an updated Hasbro Marvel Legends Ultron figure and in the span of three years, we’ve got two. With the Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania wave having a split of comic and MCU figures, it made sense to include one of Hank Pym’s arch nemesis.

Of course, the BAF Ursa Major Ultron figure was really good. Is this latest version of him really necessary? Let’s find out if this is a redundant model or the latest evolution of a terrific Marvel Legends figure.

Packaging:  For all of my griping I’m nearly at the end of Marvel Legends reviews with no window. I won’t miss it. Ultron is featured in a triumphant pose while comic art is in the background.

I still wish Hasbro would include some reference to the comic art so collectors could check out the character in a spotlight issue.

This new packaging means there’s no bio whatsoever and the rear only features the BAF accessories along with the minor offerings for Ultron.

Likeness:  Ultron rarely has the same look twice even if it’s just some minor changes. This model seems to most closely represent Ultron’s look in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars on account of the ear antennas pointing downward instead of up.

Most of the figure is the same as the Ursa Major one with smart reuse of the Iron Man 80th anniversary figure as needed. The biggest difference is the new head sculpt, which conveys plenty of Ultron’s power mad mindset.

There’s not a lot to distinguish this from the first one, but it was a smart way for Hasbro to get Ultron back out to collectors who missed him earlier.

Paint:  The BAF Ultron had a silver sheen to it while this one is more comic skewing silver. To mix it up from the first figure, Ultron has some “cracks” painted into the armor throughout.

It’s a fun touch and suggests Scarlet Witch has worn his armor down enough for Thor’s Mjolnir to start laying in some damage.

The red in the recesses of his eyes and mouth might have been a little darker, but I get what Hasbro was doing. To help make them stand out more, a brighter red was key.  Ultron’s energy, showcased with an accessory that fit in his mouth last time, replicates that Kirby crackle in the mouth paint job this time.

Scale:  Ultron stands about regular height, making him look more frightening since he’s not towering over Thor and Iron Man. He lines up just fine with Captain America and Iron Man.

Articulation: Ultron’s head is different, but the other pinless joints are just as smooth as before.

I didn’t have any problem pulling off standard action poses from energy blast gesturing to battling fist to fist with Thor, Iron Man or Wonder Man.

Ultron has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • bicep
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • upper torso
  • waist
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee (double-jointed)
  • ankle

Accessories: Ultron doesn’t have a slew of accessories, but what is included makes sense. He’s got swappable clutching hands and the matching left fist. There is no right open hand to match the left hand.

The previous Ultron had an energy trail that could be placed in his open mouth. This head sculpt isn’t wide enough to fit anything so Ultron can hold it in his hands.

It’s not the best option, but better than nothing. Hasbro did go with a darker shade of translucent red and added more black paint so it’s not the exact same as the original release.

Finally, he’s got the left arm and swappable fist of the Build-A-Figure Cassie Lang.

Worth it?  Ultron was part of the Quantumania wave, which hit clearance at a surprisingly quick rate. I was able to get him for $7.49, which made him a tremendous value. If you’re getting him late, he’s not worth $24.99, but if you can snatch him for around $22, you’re doing just fine.

Rating: 10 out of 10

I gave the original a full score. This wasn’t an essential pickup, but having some Ultron variety plus the price tag made this a can’t pass up figure.

Where to get it?  I got Ultron from Target. You can also order him from Amazon and Entertainment Earth.
