Image Comics reviews 5/22/24 – Cobra Commander #5, Void Rivals #9
Rook: Exodus #2
Rook: Exodus’ second issue should eliminate any concerns that this title will lack staying power. Writer Geoff Johns, artist Jason Fabok, colorist Brad Anderson and letterer Rob Leigh have a very original concept that seems like it’s exploding with potential.
Rook is waiting to hear from his pal, Swine. Unfortunately, Swine encountered the dangerous bear warden Ursaw and is no longer among the living. While he waits, Rook puts the finishing touches on a rocket to get them off of Exodus. While he’s encountered mega beasts and giant turtles, Rook is ready. He’s meticulously gathered parts in hopes of a successful launch but there’s no telling if it will soar or explode once it reaches orbit.
Dire Wolf, Rook’s warden trainer and “it’s complicated” ally, arrives with the bad news of both Swine and Ursaw.
Johns explains more of the logistics of the wardens and their helmets, which allow them to control various mutated species. With Ursaw controlling giant bears, Rook’s control over winged creatures doesn’t seem all that formidable. At least Dire Wolf’s wolves can pose more of a challenge.
Fabok’s art is so incredibly detailed. He packs so much eye candy into every panel making for an impressive, expansive title that seems far beyond what Rook encounters. The action sequences have a true air of danger with the perspectives of the animals and the equally intimidating Ursaw and his crew.
Anderson’s rich colors always help to bring out further details while Leigh ensures the text and sound effects flow smoothly.
This title has a very exciting premise and is delivering on it above expectations. Rook: Exodus certainly feels like a book that can’t be missed already.
