DC Comics reviews 5/21/24 – Nightwing #114, Titans #11
Batman Superman World’s Finest #27
DC’s best ongoing title brings it again in another fun-filled installment. Superman, Batman and Robin find themselves in an unlikely position as Bat-Mite and Mister Mxyzptlk seek their help in dealing with a threat killing the heroic imps. Last issue, the trio got transposed onto a wall just as the other heroes arrive to face their archenemies empowered by their evil imps. Only one hero can save the day. And you’ll never guess their identity.
Writer Mark Waid always seems to have such a blast writing the characters. He completely gets the personalities of Batman and Superman to the point he’s able to write a back-and-forth exchange without making it sound like Batman hates Superman. Waid knows the difference between Bat-Mite and the more mischievous Mxyzptlk. And of course, he constantly avoids making Robin come off like an unnecessary third wheel.
Dan Mora gets some assistance on the art front this issue. Travis Mercer contributes some pages. Mercer’s art works fine with this reality switching storyline with logical and well-executed panel arrangements and layouts. Mora still seems to be on a different level with his creativity and lively interpretations of Waid’s story. Tamra Bonvillain’s color work is excellent. There’s so many mixes of colors and characters running around yet she keeps it clean and easy to follow. That’s also true letterer Steve Wands’ work with fun sound effect fonts and text arrangements.
Another month, another highly entertaining issue of World’s Finest. This is going to make a terrific collected arc and the fun isn’t over yet.
