Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #7

Few books recently have been as unapologetically fun as this unexpected crossover.  Writer Brian Buccellato happily accepted the challenge and obligations that come with a book featuring the Justice League vs. The Legion of Doom with Godzilla, King Kong and a bunch of other titans thrown in the mix.

The big finale of this mini-series similarly did not disappoint. It was filled with plenty of big, blockbuster style action; epic heroic moments and some quality character beats as well. DC has shown impressive restraint in not delivering a new Justice League title. When that book does get published, Buccellato certainly made a case that his name should be in consideration. He nailed the characterization of a mega-sized League with no trouble. As well as their villains.

This issue also contains an ingenious moment that will likely encourage newcomers to check out the series and be a defining scene for the Day 1 readers.

Artists Christian Duce and Tom Derenick truly brought their A game to this story. They tag teamed effectively without a distraction handoff visually. Both brough a strong level of detail whether in the structure of the beasts or tapping into their imagination to stage the fight scenes. Luis Guerrero’s color work is vibrant, providing an extra level of polish to a high-level presentation. Letterers Richard Starkings and Comicraft’s Tyler Smith handle the yells, grunts, power effects and dialogue with little trouble.

It’s nice to just have a wide, sweeping out of continuity spectacle that plays out like a blockbuster movie. This series more than met my expectations based on the premise and is worth reading for fans of any of the participants.
