Batman Superman World’s Finest #28

Among the great things about this title is just the basic sense of fun. World’s Finest isn’t wallowing in dark and gloomy takes of the title characters. Writer Mark Waid even found a way to make Batman fun again without being silly. And his handle on Superman and Robin is perfect. Bat-Mite is with Superman and Batman, who’s having a tough time accepting Bat-Mite’s “assistance” while Robin and Mister Mxyzptlk are helping Jimmy Olsen defend the planet against Doom-Mite.

Waid, as always, keeps a good sense of humor in the mix even while making a powered-up imp a serious threat. The characterization continues to be some of the best in comics as the cast sounds authentic. There’s no dialogue that reads like something the characters wouldn’t say.

Dan Mora gets an art assist from Travis Mercer, who handles the Batman, Superman and Bat-Mite sequences with little trouble. Thankfully, their styles aren’t so different and the various dimension-hopping accounts for the shift from Mora’s animated spin on the characters. Tamra Bonvillain’s color work is sensational especially with Doom-Mite’s teleportation energy effects in action. Letterer Steve Wands fully leans into the looser tone of the story with clever sound effects.

World’s Finest maintains its high level of quality and its standing of the one DC title you can’t miss if you want a classic, character and action driven series.
