Writer Tom Taylor dials up the heat on Dick Grayson this issue as the showdown with Heartless rages on. Dick doesn’t know that Heartless is among the guests at his charity fundraiser. That makes it so much worse when Heartless sabotages the event and kidnaps Dick not knowing who else he’s captured as well. Taylor has had to put a cap on Batman’s ultimate detective/crimefighter skill set to create some drama for storylines before. This might be the most glaring and somewhat out of character moment. That’s the unfortunate aspect of a book about Nightwing with Batman as a recurring presence.
No offense to the other artist that have filled in, but this issue proves why Bruno Redondo (with ink assists from Caio Filipe) will be so revered for his lengthy stint on the title. There’s so much clever imagery and the way Redondo conveys a disoriented Dick is expertly done. The downside of this arc is there’s just three more issues to enjoy this Taylor/Redondo and colorist Adriano Lucas collaboration.
Lucas’ role remains vital in properly showcasing Redondo’s art in the best light possible and Wes Abbott’s lettering shines with some dazzling sound effects.
Heartless’ master plan is pretty insidious setting up a serious cliffhanger as Fallen Grayson part 2 delivers another excellent installment.
