DC Comics reviews 6/18/24 – Nightwing #115, Titans #12

The Dark-Winged Queen arc has been OK. Raven being corrupted doesn’t make for the most compelling story and feels exactly like the kind of situation the team would have safeguards against since it happens so often. These last two issues have been the strongest of the arc.

Not because writer Tom Taylor found some fresh new angle to approach it, but because Evil Raven wasn’t the focus. And when Taylor did bring her to the spotlight it carried far greater weight this time.

The Titans got ambushed by an android with the consciousness of Vanessa, a young girl who grew up idolizing the team. Convinced by T.O. Morrow that the actual Titans have been replaced by monsters, Vanessa attacks them. Taylor doesn’t draw the fight out showing how effectively the Titans can operate as a team in taking down new threats. The showcase for Cyborg and Beast Boy was especially satisfying.

Artist Lucas Meyer continues to deliver quality, reliable artwork. Characters are nicely expressive without having too extreme emotional reactions and the action scenes flow very smoothly. Meyer has been a great asset to the title since coming on board. Colorist Adriano Lucas does solid work with the color choices particularly the segments where Raven is having her inner monologue. Wes Abbott’s lettering is clean with easy-to-follow dialogue arrangements.

Taylor has had a challenge saying something new with this Raven arc. This issue felt like he broke through the tricky premise to a very compelling road. With the shift reverting to Raven, it should be interesting seeing how this all unfolds.
