Image Comics reviews 6/19/24 – Destro #1, Redcoat #3
Destro #1
Continuing from the events of Cobra Commander #5, Destro and MARS have aligned with Cobra Commander and his new army. Destro definitely isn’t sure if he can trust his new ally, but Cobra Commander’s control of Energon is putting him into a position he doesn’t find all that comfortable — reliant on someone else. Worse, Cobra Commander is used to being obeyed by his servants, a role Destro has no desire to occupy.
Writer Dan Watters quickly explores that familiar power struggle dynamic with Destro and Cobra Commander. This time, from a slightly different lens. Watters shows in great detail how powerful a global presence Destro is and the reach of his forces. Cobra Commander is the new face on the scene and Destro is not thrilled he’s being questioned by this creepy psychopath.

Watters also introduces Tomax and Xamot, the Crimson Twins to the mix. A fascinating aspect of the Energon Universe take on G.I. Joe and Cobra is seeing how all these various entities and factions began uniting under one army’s banner.
The twins are as formidable as they’ve ever been shown with a ruthlessness that marks them as major threats especially since they’re rivals on the international scene alongside MARS. Watters has an interesting take on them as risk assessment experts. That’s a clever role and one that would fit in well under Cobra Commander’s new organization.
Andrei Bressan’s art is somewhat rough at points, particular in character expressions, but he provides a very strong sense of drama and political intrigue. Colorist Adriano Lucas offers a mesmerizing blend of reds, oranges and yellows to contrast with Destro’s black and silver attire. Letterer Rus Wooton keeps the dialogue and sound effects clean and easy to follow.
Destro #1 brings in more familiar faces to the Energon Universe with a political thriller tone to help it stand apart. This is another must-read in the eventual formation of G.I. Joe and Cobra.
