G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #307

g-i-joe-a-real-american-hero-#307

Real American Hero didn’t get off to a slow start since coming over to Skybound, but it feels like writer Larry Hama is finding a new gear. Issue #307 was another very strong read as the Joes observing Serpentor Khan’s plans on Cobra Island get discovered and the Joes learn that Dawn’s parents were killed.

It’s a small thing but having Psyche-Out join Duke in breaking the news to Dawn felt significant.  If for no other reason than Hama’s skillful use of the right Joes for the appropriate time even if it’s just to counsel a grieving teammate.

The action was very intense as Wet Suit, Muskrat, Helix and Multo evade Serpentor Khan’s forces. Paul Pelletier is filling in on art, but his layouts, dramatic presentation and action choreography are making a strong case for him to be the other artist when Chris Mooneyham is unable to handle the workload.

Inker Tony Kordos, colorist Francesco Segala (with flatter Sabrina Del Grosso) and letterer Pat Brosseau also do their part for a striking visual presentation.

This was a really great installment with an excellent mix of character interplay especially considering the large cast and thrilling action sequences. Real American Hero might be getting collected and made into compendium editions, but this title is showing there’s no need to fondly reminisce over the past. There’s still plenty to enjoy right now.
