Image Comics reviews 6/19/24 – Destro #1, Redcoat #3

Redcoat #3

Redcoat has been a spectacularly fun series thanks to its unique take on the Founding Fathers. Writer Geoff Johns seems to be having a blast writing Simon Pure, a former British soldier who’s become immortal, and hanging with young Albert Einstein.

This issue finds Simon reeling from a cut from the Axe of Lies. The origin of the axe is told by Benedict Arnold another unexpected fun cast member in this very loosely history-based series. Johns is basically writing the movie as it seems such an obvious transition to the big screen.

Good thing Johns has such a capable “director” in artist Bryan Hitch (with inker Andrew Currie), who is always so skilled at capturing big blockbuster style moments anyway. Hitch has been in the midst of a career resurgence delivering some of the best artwork in his storied tenure. The detail and expressions are at an elite level with few peers. Brad Anderson’s give the art a nice glossy coat with dazzling reds, yellows and piercing blue tones.

Rob Leigh’s lettering is always clean, and his judicious use of sound effects makes them more impactful.

Redcoat has been a very pleasant surprise. The creative team is pushing all the right buttons to establish this as one of the early gems of the Ghost Machine era.
