Star Wars The Black Series Ki-Adi Mundi review (No. 4) Attack of the Clones

It’s taken Hasbro’s Star Wars team a while, but they’re finally knocking out vital prequel characters in the Black Series line. Ki-Adi Mundi has been a long overdue addition. He was one of the more distinct members of the Jedi Council and was part of the main three alongside Yoda and Mace Windu.

With more focus being given to Attack of the Clones as of late, it made perfect sense for the Star Wars team to include one of the key survivors from the Battle of Geonosis.

Let’s see if this Jedi Master was worth the wait or if Hasbro botched an essential prequel hero.

Packaging: The Attack of the Clones line features a dark, blood red accent color. That’s fitting since AOTC marks the start of a brutal, lengthy war throughout the galaxy. With the window back in place, it’s easy to see any flaws but more so if anything is missing or swapped.

The mural image on the side features Ki-Adi in a relaxed, composed state that suits the thoughtful Jedi Master. There’s nothing too distinct about his background though I suspect it’s Geonosis. One of the strong suits of the Black Series line is the great bio write-ups in a limited amount of space. Ki-Adi’s is another solid one that explains his role at the time of AOTC.

Likeness: Ki-Adi had one of my favorite Revenge of the Sith figures in the Vintage Collection. The sculpt did a great job with his unique head shape along with a cloth hood to place over it. This was a bonus as the only time he wore it up was during Qui-Gon Jinn’s funeral.

Hasbro’s Black Series sculptors have been on a roll lately getting actor’s likenesses down much stronger than in previous years. That’s for the non-alien characters. Alien/humanoid characters have always had great likenesses. Ditto for Ki-Adi whose sculpt is fantastic.

The detailing on his head is really well done with various indentions. His eyebrows and facial hair don’t just look like a lump of plastic with some random strands. It has the appearance of having some fluffiness to it.

Lastly, his expression is dead-on for Ki-Adi, which conveys his reserved and contemplative demeanor.

His outfit is executed well with the hood nearly draping his shoulders. He wears a different style outfit than the other Jedi with more of a tailored flow to his outer tunic that somewhat resembled the robes of his peers.

The sleeves have the lined texture appropriate to the source material right down to the pads covering his hands. His knees look a little weird when bent as there’s a gap with the pants. That’s been a recurring issue with the Black Series figures whether with kneepads or pants. That’s the trouble with pants as opposed to spandex like Marvel Legends figures.

MORE:

Paint: No issues on this category. The highlight again is with the head sculpt with just enough of a wash and darker elements to bring out the details in both the skin and facial hair.

His sleeves may have benefitted from a wash, but that could have also gotten too dark and distracting. The only precise bit of paint detail is the belt buckle, which was done with no trouble.

Scale: Ki-Adi was taller than most Jedi by virtue of his head. He’s about eye level with Mace Windu and a little taller than Anakin Skywalker.

Articulation:  Ki-Adi is your typical Jedi adept at deflecting laser blasts with his lightsaber. At least in the prequel films, he wasn’t a flipping, athletic fighter.

He battled more like a knight keeping a steady stance and maintaining a powerful base. He was just as comfortable using a dual grip as single hand strikes.

Thanks to the larger elbow joint, it basically has the same range as a double-jointed setup. That definitely aids in duel stances and positioning him for whatever The Separatists throw their way.

He’s got butterfly shoulder joints, which allow him to rear back for Force push gestures. His tunic provides just a little bit of resistance and can’t hold the pose on its own, but you get more movement than I expected.

Ki-Adi Mundi has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders (butterfly joints)
  • elbow
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • hips
  • thighs
  • knees
  • ankles

Accessories:  As usual with the line, there’s not an abundance of accessories. Ki-Adi only comes with his lightsaber.

Maybe to add some extra value, Hasbro could start including lightsaber hilts without the blade. It’s no real problem taking the blade out, but there is that momentary second of concern of snapping the tiny peg when removing it.

Ki-Adi doesn’t have any other viable options since he doesn’t wear a Jedi cloak. A separate hood for his cloak doesn’t seem feasible.

Worth it?  Ki-Adi Mundi was the standard price of $24.99. He’s in pretty high demand and seemed like a Jedi who wouldn’t hit clearance or any sales, so I pulled the trigger earlier than normal.

Thanks to the tremendous execution and effort put into the sculpt, I don’t feel ripped off. Even with the minimal accessories.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Ki-Adi features a great sculpt but would have benefited from some fine tuning on the knee execution and a bit more paint. He’s definitely worth adding to your Jedi collection.
