Marvel Legends Uncanny X-Men #275 Retro Wolverine review

Wolverine, Storm and Banshee missed out on rocking the X-Men training suits when they joined the team. The X-Men were a squad of individuals by that point and didn’t need a uniform look. This made the Uncanny X-Men #275 arc, which featured that iteration of the team so memorable. Hasbro captured that look with Retro Wolverine, a complement to the two three character sets based on the cover.

It feels like Hasbro has done 40 Wolverine figures at this point, but this one is unique. And it’s the rare Wolverine that matches up with a team look for the X-Men. Let’s see if Retro Wolverine is worth completing the Uncanny X-Men #275 squad.

Packaging:  Wolverine is the odd man out with the pair of three-packs featuring the rest of the team in packaging with Uncanny X-Men #275 in the backdrop.

He’s got the standard X-Men Retro card. The art features him charging claws-first at his target and a smaller character box with four at the top left corner.

His feature is “Classic Claws!” I love the pop of vibrant colors we get from these Retro lines. Over on the back we get the cross sell of the other characters on the right side. The left features a small bio that does a decent job of summarizing this costume choice as part of the new X-Men squad.

Likeness: The distinct set-up with the training costumes allows Retro Wolverine to not wear a mask for a change. Hasbro gave Logan two head sculpts. The default one is a stoic, calm expression.

That fits as Wolverine is less wild card berserker and more about helping Storm keep the new guard in line. This head sculpt is amazing with really strong work done on the strands of his hair.

Like the other Uncanny X-Men #275 figures, Wolverine’s outfit features the keyed-in wrist and thigh straps. This is so much better than them sliding up and down the figures. And the big circular X-belt is also firmly around his waist.

While you have display options, the default setup has his claws popped out. The claws are solid and largely look good though they still suffer from that frustrating issue of not staying in the socket too snugly. This is to help remove them, but I’d rather Hasbro just made another set and one where the claws didn’t twist and turn with any movement.

MORE:

Paint: With the blue and yellow bodies, Hasbro opted for molded plastic with little need for paintwork.

Naturally there’s a little fuzziness in places where the blue and yellow line up, but it’s not too distracting.

My figure’s right fist is missing some of the paint with the middle claw, which makes it look like the claw is popping out from higher in his fist.

Scale: Thankfully, Hasbro didn’t shortcut this Wolverine and just give him the same body as the other dudes. He’s still appropriately shorter than Gambit and Banshee. And he’s a little shorter than Psylocke too.

Articulation:  Hasbro has made sure that Wolverine figures can hit all the essential slashing, leaping and stabbing poses.

His shorter stature makes for a cooler visual with him reaching up to take out larger and taller opponents.

Retro Wolverine has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders (butterfly shoulders)
  • bicep
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee (double-jointed)
  • ankle

Accessories: Retro Wolverine comes with the most obvious yet very useful accessories. He’s got an alternate angry head sculpt. If you’ve got a neutral default having an intense, ready to rip and slash expression.

Additionally, he’s got a set of fists with retracted claws.

Worth it?  Originally, Retro Wolverine was $24.99. I don’t think the Retro card is enough of a selling point compared to the lack of a Build-A-Figure especially since the six X-Men Retro figures were all worth getting. Target had this set for $12.80.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

The strict adherence to scale and the welcome addition of two head sculpts makes this a very solid Wolverine variant. I just wish the claws were less loose.
