Inside Out 2 scores strong second weekend with $100M
Inside Out 2 isn’t slowing down on its emotional jaunt through the box office. In its second weekend, the Disney/Pixar film was greedy with moviegoers’ focus snagging $100 million. That’s the seventh best second weekend since Avengers: Endgame (available on Amazon) in 2019. It’s also the best sophomore weekend of any animated film.
The 2019 Lion King is the highest grossing animated film so far. In its second weekend, it saw a 60% drop but still earned $76.6 million en route to $1.6 billion worldwide. In another encouraging note for Disney/Pixar, the $100 million second weekend was better than the 2015 original’s opening weekend haul.
Inside Out 2 saw a very minor 35% drop from its $154 million opening. Next weekend sees the debut of A Quiet Place: Day One. It’s possible Day One won’t disrupt Inside Out 2’s box office supremacy. A Quiet Place Part II opened in 2021 during the height of the pandemic and managed $297 million worldwide. The first film, which debuted in 2018, earned $341 million alone domestically.
That said, next weekend could spark further joy from Disney/Pixar.
In second place was Bad Boy: Ride or Die with $19 million. The fourth Bad Boys film has now brought in $147 million domestically and $289 million worldwide.
Newcomer The Bikeriders opened with $10 million. With a $35 million budget, the Austin Butler/Jodie Comer film doesn’t need to make blockbuster numbers as opposed to just being consistent over the next few weekends.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was fourth with $3.6 million for its seventh weekend to rack up $164 million domestically. The Garfield Movie completes the Top 5 with $3.6 million. In five weekends, it’s brought in $85 million domestically and $230 million worldwide. Sony/Alcon have to be smiling like fat cats for this $60 million-budgeted film to prove such a solid hit.
