G.I. Joe Classified Series Cobra Ferret ATV and Scout review

Sure, Cobra could go BIG with vehicles like the Rattler, HISS Tank and Mamba, but some of their best options were the quick hit and run vehicles like the FANG, Trubble Bubbles or the Cobra Ferret. The Ferret was always associated with cool Cobras.

The original Real American Hero version had Firefly and Storm Shadow — two of my favorite Cobras — rolling out on it. And the Crimson Twins introduction in the comic book — and mini-cartoon commercial — had them using the Ferret to escape the Joes as well. Plus, there’s something cool with the idea of Cobra using a tricked-out ATV to carry out their brand of carnage.

 

My Cobra Classified Series fleet is shaping up nicely with the HISS, Trubble Bubbles and the COIL cycle so I was excited about adding the Ferret. Let’s see if it rolls roughshod over my Joes are is just going to be fodder for my VAMP.

Packaging: Just like with Clutch and the VAMP, we get the old school G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero presentation. We get an action shot of a squad of Ferrets on the move and a plastic window showing off Scout and her gear.

Scout and the Ferret are No. 119 in the line. The stats naturally are for Scout. She scored a 2 in recon and a 1 in light weapons, infiltration and driver. That makes sense as Scout would be best suited for recon since she’d hop off the Ferret at times to get intel for her Cobra supervisors.

The back shows Scout and her accessories as well as the Ferrett ATV. Three increasingly larger pictures on the side show off some of the Ferrett’s features.

Likeness: Not that surprisingly, Scout uses the same Cobra female trooper mold as the Valkyrie. It’s a solid base body with a good amount of detailing and texturing.

And it features a pretty sinister looking mask.

The only change with Scout is the addition of a vest for added protection. The detailing on this from the raised, angular pattern to the straps on both sides really makes for a nice upgrade to the Valkryie mold. Sometimes just one add-on makes all the difference.

Paint: Scout gets a light grey outfit in a similar shade to the Cobra Stinger Driver. That’s providing some cool symmetry with the Cobra vehicle operators.

To break up the light grey, she’s got darker grey elements in the ribbed, textured parts of her outfit. There’s a good amount of black in her mask. vest, belt, arm and leg bands, gloves and her boots.

And to capture a bit of that Motorcross aesthetic, there’s some Cobra blue and white accents in her vest, gauntlets and kneepads.

Her paint job with the revealed portion of her head sculpt is awesome. It gives Scout a great intensity and it looks like she has green eyes. There’s some minor fuzziness around the blue and white sections, but overall, this is a very clean paintjob.

Scale: Again, to no surprise, Scout is shorter than most of her Cobra counterparts. And she’s even shorter than Baroness. I love the ranges in scales for the figures in this line.

Articulation: The main objective with Scout’s articulation is that it allows her to comfortably drive/ride the Ferret.

And as needed sneak around and take out some Joe outposts. The CS articulation makes that no trouble at all and Scout will look great hanging with the Valkyrie.

Accessories: While Scout is driving the Ferret, she does come with a solid number of accessories.

First and most importantly, because even Cobra believes in safety, Scout gets a helmet. It’s definitely motorcross inspired while still playing up that Cobra motif. The paintjob on the helmet is also solid with a mix of black and white with a blue grill.

She also two pistols and a knife so Scout won’t be unprepared if the Ferret takes some damage.

Now let’s discuss the other part of this set — The Ferret!

The Classified Series team has stopped trying to reinvent vehicles or come up with new designs. There’s no need when the Real American Hero line had so many legit amazing vehicles.

A number of them that would be impossible to recreate in the six-inch scale. Fortunately, that’s not the case with the Ferret.

Basically, the CS version is a plus sized version of the RAH version with a few modern flourishes to provide some extra value. It’s an amazing update while retaining all the fun of the original.

As the name implies, the Ferret is Cobra’s ATV. It’s a pretty loaded up All Terrain Vehicle with a serious amount of firepower for essentially a scout element in the Cobra fleet.

It’s got rubber tires that actually roll. They’ve actually got a Cobra ATV tampo on. The original has P.NR-16 and the CS version has P.NR 23 to show some time has passed. That’s a cool touch. Other old stickers like the Cobra X02 are included as well.

The front machine gun basically rotates 360 degrees. That’s only restricted by the steering column, which also has a good range of rotation as well. It’s got a cool tampo as well.

There’s plenty of fun stickers throughout the Ferret though it’s not as fun to not be able to place them on it myself. CS team designers engineered the Ferret with some suspension, so it bounces up and down when you push on it. That really adds another level to that ATV feel.

It’s cast in a deep Cobra blue with some black elements mixed in as well as some red accents. The Ferret seems scaled about right coming up the waist of a standard size Cobra. Two characters can fit without much trouble at all. I do wish there was a way that the rider could operate the side blast cannon. This layout is consistent with the original version though.

In another cool touch, the cannon can be switched to the left or right side thanks to the small connector piece that easily affixes to either part of the rack. The sidewinder missile section also allows for some makeshift footrests for more Cobras if you really wanted to max it out.

Maybe the one missing aspect of the Ferret is the lack of a stand/flip down base piece. I had a lot of fun conceiving stunt poses for Scout that would have been much easier to execute with just a simple stand.

This is a really nice chunky vehicle that is intended for light recon missions but can hold its own against Clutch and the VAMP.

Worth It?  This set was $54.99 on Pulse. That was the same price as the Trubble Bubble, which I liked, but doesn’t seem nearly as intricate and massive as the Ferret. Considering Joe CS figures are $25 now, you’re paying $30 for the Ferret, which seems like a really solid price point.

I was looking forward to the Ferret and it really delivered. Scout is a great addition to the faceless Cobra grunts and I’m regretting not getting another one or two now. This year continues to be a stellar one for this brand and this is another quality release.
