Ain’t No Grave #3

Ain’t No Grave remains a fascinating visually arresting story with a compelling premise. Ryder continues her journey to stop Death from killing her. Even if that means facing eternity as part of Madame Gates crew ensuring her demonic steamboat keeps rolling along.

Writer Skottie Young does a solid job of switching between the present day and a flashback where Ryder utilizes her savvy card shark skills to score a big win. In the flashback, she’s got to figure out a way to keep her family’s home. Young offers solid insight into Ryder’s no matter the odds mentality here, which translates well in the present-day sequence.

Artist Jorge Corona clearly puts so much love into every panel, which are packed with copious amounts of detail, intricate background elements and costume designs. The hellish landscape allows Corona to go less traditional with the character designs such as the massive Madame Gates with her heart-shaped corset.

Colorist Jean-Francois Beaulieu adds so much to Corona’s wonderful spectacles with gorgeous blends and appropriate tonal shifts from the flashbacks to the steamer. Letterer Nate Piekos gives the dialogue more prominent word balloons with a hexagonal like shape. The sound effects are also eye-catching.

There are only two more issues left in this series and I’m already clamoring for more of Ryder’s adventures. This continues to be one of the most fun, unpredictable adventures on comic stands.
