Image Comics reviews 7/10/24 – Transformers #10, Geiger #4
Transformers #10
It wasn’t that long ago when Optimus Prime and the Autobots were celebrating a well-earned victory over Starscream’s Decepticons. That was for the briefest of moments until Shockwave and Soundwave took over and are sizing up Earth as a buffet to mine for all of its resources to aid in the restoration of Cybertron.
Writer Daniel Warren Johnson doesn’t give the Autobots much of a break in Transformers #10. The war continues to follow them leading to untold destruction. That’s largely the reason why Beachcomber didn’t want to be the one to bring the war to Earth. Johnson does a fantastic job of exploring how the Autobots’ pacifist would react to a new landscape with no war in sight. Would he be in a rush to repair his companions or just let Earth sit unaware of the threat that crashed landed on its lands?
It’s a pretty compelling argument especially as all of Beachcomber’s fears are coming to fruition. Prime and his surviving Autobots finally learn the secret identity of the Autobot that Shockwave had in custody. He’s a fighter worth Elita-1 and her forces risking everything to free, but is it too later?
Artist Jorge Corona continues to bring his excellent flair to the story while maintaining the visual continuity established by Johnson in the first arc. Shockwave and Soundwave look hauntingly terrifying while Beachbomber’s prisoner is equally formidable. Colorist Mike Spicer and letterer Rus Wooton really get to show off this issue with some dazzling colors and dramatic sound effects.
Transformers #10 keeps raising the threat level against the Autobots. Every time it seems like they’re making some headway, the Decepticons stack the deck against them all over again. This could make for a depressing read, but Johnson and company are doing an excellent job of conveying the perpetual uphill battle the Autobots face.
