Star Wars The Black Series Grogu review

One of the wildest reveals over the last couple of years was the Star Wars The Black Series Grogu standalone figure. Not for Hasbro releasing the umpteenth figure of one of the biggest moneymakers this century, but the price. This tiny, barely articulated offering was getting the standard $25 price point. No sale.

I wasn’t sitting around regretting my decision, but when I saw Grogu at Ross for a far more reasonable $6, I had to jump on it.

Let’s see if the Jedi dropout has what it takes to be the chosen figure…

Packaging: Grogu gets the standard packaging this time as opposed to the very small Black Series debut when he was just The Child. He’s No. 26 in The Mandalorian line so it’s definitely not a case of Hasbro being lax in cranking out Mando figures.

Like the other distinct films/series The Mandalorian has its own accent color. This one is orange and a terrific drawing of Grogu summoning the Force with the backdrop of the Force-henge temple at Tython. The bio is short since Grogu doesn’t have a ton to discuss at this point.

Likeness: Hasbro could take shortcuts with Grogu, but they’ve always done a great job with the sculpt incorporating plenty of details. All while giving Grogu’s head sculpts plenty of character.

His robe has plenty of folds and tailoring around the collar and sleeves. There’s not a lot of space to work with, but the sculpt team did great work.

This version of Grogu is meant to stay seated in the pram so he’s posed sitting up, not standing straight. Not that it would be that major a difference.

MORE:

Paint: Given the smaller nature of Grogu, I could almost expect Hasbro to cut some corners with the paintwork.

That’s not the case as his head has several paint apps with a brownish pink for his inner ears, nose and cheeks. His eye paint is done with a glossy black to make them pop.

Scale: Grogu is barely walking around at this point, so his scale doesn’t matter. At its standard resting height, the pram comes up to right around Mando’s elbow.

Articulation:  Grogu certainly doesn’t need a ton of articulation since he’s hitching a ride in the pram and is just in his ‘sit there and look cute’ phase. He’s got all the articulation he needs for that with ball-jointed shoulders and a neck peg.

He can’t do much with some of his included accessories though, which kinda defeats the purpose of some of them.

Grogu has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders

Accessories: Grogu comes with a lot of accessories. Some old and some reused. Given the box art, I would have loved to have gotten a closed eyes channeling The Force head sculpt for him.

The most important is the pram. That was his main ways of transportation for most of Season 1 and a little into Season 2. It comes with a transparent stand so it can be suspended in air.

For those moments when Grogu needs a nap, the pram has a top to close it up. It’s nicely detailed and has a very solid paint job with a less than pristine orange stripe along the middle. There’s also some grime or possibly blaster scorch marks.

He also has his Mythosaur Skull necklace. Considering the scale it is very well done. And he’s got the tube of cookies he Force snagged from his classmates.

Reused accessories are the soup bowl, a little frog and the small ball from the Razorcrest stick shift.

Worth it? As The Child, Grogu’s first figure was $8. Getting this one with more accessories and his pram? Great deal.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Where to get it?  You can still get him from Ross, who has sneakily become a very reliable retailer for excellent figure deals. Failing that, you can also get Grogu from my affiliates Amazon at $14.
