Deadpool and Wolverine slash box office records with $205M opening
There’s only been nine films that have opened with over $200 million. Deadpool and Wolverine is the latest to join the exclusive club, but it’s the first R-rated film to earn that distinction. It didn’t just squeak through the $200 million mark as it opened to $205 million.
Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine proved a massive box office pairing. Probably right in line with Marvel Studios’ head Kevin Feige expectations when he greenlit this hardcore R-rated film. The first for a Disney Marvel film.
Deadpool 2 opened to $126 million in 2018. That topped the $132 million of the original in 2016 so this was a colossal opening.
D&W does surpass Black Panther’s $202 million opening back in 2018. Black Panther does still hold the high mark for a solo release, still only topped by the last two Avengers films, the third MCU Spider-Man film and the Deadpool and Wolverine team-up.

Internationally, the film did crazy business as well with $233.5 million to take its global haul to $438.5 million. Nearly halfway there now, Deadpool & Wolverine seems like a lock to cross the $1 billion mark like fellow R-rated comic book film The Joker.
With this massive opening it seems like Feige is gonna have to start saving now to convince Jackman to return. At least for Avengers: Secret Wars.
Twisters surprisingly didn’t get too shaken, holding on decently against a major summer blockbuster film with a $36 million second weekend. The Glen Powell-led film has now earned $155 million domestically and $221 million worldwide.
Despicable Me 4 came in third with $14.2 million taking its sixth week total to $290.9 million with $677.6 million globally.
In fourth place was Inside Out 2, which added $8.3 million to its $613 million total allowing it to top Incredibles 2 as the top grossing domestic animated film of all time. Worldwide, it’s now at $1.5 billion.
Longlegs wrapped the Top 5 taking in $6.7 million taking its three-weekend total to $58.6 million.
