Super 7 Silverhawks Ultimates Wave 3 Buzz-Saw review

While Super 7’s Silverhawks line lacks the articulation I’d prefer, it’s hard to see a figure like Buzz-Saw and not be impressed. Buzz-Saw is part of the third wave of figures. He might be the most imposing figure in the line next to Armored Mon*Star.

As a big fan of the eclectic characters in the Limbo Mob, I’m excited about finally giving Windhammer some backup. The line doesn’t seem to be progressing at the rate where the full Mob will be done in figure form, but I’m glad to get some of the guns.

Let’s see if Buzz-Saw is a true cut up or will leave my hopes in tatters.

Packaging: Super 7 did a fun presentation for the figures. All of the Limbo Mob have a red foil outer box. It’s a fingerprint magnet so be forewarned. Slide that up to see the figure absolutely dominating the space in the plastic window.

He’s massive and contrasts nicely against the red backdrop. The back features an animated picture of him along with a very well written bio.

Likeness: Buzz-Saw was a big brawny robot and one of the Limbo Mob enforcers. As his name suggests, he’s all about his sawblades. There’s some embedded into his shoulders and in the attachments over his hands.

The sculpt is solid fully capturing his cartoon likeness from the buzzsaw mohawk, frowny face to the three slots in his chest panel and pulleys on the side.

He’s a massive figure too, which aids with that whole larger than life cartoon style of these Ultimates.

Scale: In the cartoon, Buzz-Saw didn’t seem as wide and thick. That distinction was largely reserved for Mumbo Jumbo. But I’m not exactly gonna complain about a big villain being too big. Especially when he’s not crazily out of scale.

He’s the largest figure in the wave so far with no contest, but even he will be looking way up at Mon*Star.

MORE:

Paint:  Similar to the other Super 7 Silverhawks figures, Buzz-Saw’s paint job isn’t an exact match for how he looked in the cartoon, which is throwing off the look slightly. The front panel with the slots is the same color as the “elbow” joints.

In the cartoon the rest of his body save the arms and hip joints, which are a light brown, should be a darker mustard. The arms and hips are painted properly as well as the top portion of Buzz-Saw’s head.

It seems like a minor issue, but the lighter colors don’t make him look as menacing. And it also hinders the evil robot glow in his eyes since the shades are so similar.

On the plus side there were no issues with paint applications.

Articulation:  Super7’s articulation scheme is a few decades old compared to some other lines. It’s hard to collect these figures and imagine what if Super 7 incorporated modern articulation standards to them.

Buzz-Saw really suffers here exactly in the area that should have been an articulation priority — his arms. The shoulders flare out slightly, but you can’t form raise them up in a T-shape. You’re able to raise them straight out and the ball-jointed elbows allow for good range of movement.

Ditto for his hips and knees, which give him the ability to hit some deeper crouches. Thanks to his larger feet he maintains a pretty strong center of balance.

Buzz-Saw has:

  • neck
  • shoulders
  • sawblades
  • elbows
  • wrist
  • torso
  • waist (swivel)
  • knees
  • ankles
  • feet

Accessories:  Super7’s calling card is an extensive array of accessories for their figures. Buzz-Saw comes with a ton of actual useful accessories.

He has two additional head options. The first is a head sculpt that looks very similar to the default one save the saw blade in a perpetual spinning motion.

Next up is the more expressive open mouth sculpt. Like Windhammer, this is likely to be my default portrait for him.

He has a swappable set of hands that allows him to hold objects.

The major object is his grenade launcher style blaster, which is unique among Silverhawk weapons since it’s actually painted up like a gun.

Next is his massive arm cannon, which plugs into the arm socket in lieu of the hands.

He’s got two pull handles. These are what he would use to rev up his saw blades when it was time for action.

To match up with the Silverhaws, Buzz-Saw has his own bird, Shredator.

He sounds like he should be a member of the Decepticons. He’s got a rotating saw blade in his head and has hinged wings.

Unlike some of the other birds, Shredator only has an in-flight mode so he can’t perch on Buzz-Saw’s shoulders or arm too well.

Worth It?  Buzz-Saw clocks in at $55.99, but you can get him on a non-mint price of $41.25. That’s a better price and more of what the line really should cost in general.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Paint coloring issues aside, Buzz-Saw is a pretty fun figure with good size for an imposing villain.
