Deadpool and Wolverine hits $1 billion, It Ends With Us delivers $50M debut
Deadpool and Wolverine stood atop the box office for a third week with $54.5 million en route to crossing the vaunted $1 billion milestone.
The jolt of life for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now taking aim at Joker at $1.078 billion for the title of highest grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Domestically, Deadpool and Wolverine has grossed $456 million. That’s also good enough for the all-non in JJ time R-rated mark, which obliterated the previous mark of $370 million by The Passion of the Christ.
This week proved more challenging to retain the top spot. The main culprit? Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively, whose romance drama. It Ends With Us earned an impressive $50 million. With a marginal budget of just $25 million, It Ends With Us is already a hit for distributor Sony.
Borderlands was the only other big release for the weekend and that was dead on arrival. The Cate Blanchett-led video game adaptation managed a meager $8.8 million against its $115 million budget.
Twisters continues having a windfall at the box office earning another $15 million in its fourth weekend to take its domestic total to $222 million.
