Jada Toys Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers Chun-Li review

With the Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers Chun-Li, I can officially consider myself all-in with Jada Toys’ Street Fighter line. Admittedly I wasn’t a hard sell for the line as I’ve got SOTA and Storm Collectibles versions of the World Warriors. Coming in quick with a hyper articulated version of the thigh master, herself for under $30? Sold.

Despite the early and well-deserved love, I wanted to see Jada’s commitment to the line before being upset that I never got more than Ryu, Fei Long and Chun-Li from them. Now that they’re fully invested, I’m thrilled to play catch up and grab as many Street Fighter figures they plan to make.

Let’s see if Chun-Li is as good as her reputation.

Packaging: I really love the packaging. It’s set up like an arcade cabinet complete with player 1 and player 2 joystick and buttons.

On the front, we get the game artwork of Chun-Li. I love the top addition of the health bar for 1P and 2P. Either side features just a few of The Final Challengers with Ryu, Cammy, Dee Jay, T. Hawk and Vega visible.

Over on the back, there’s just the cross sell of the figures in wave 1 as well as the 19 playable characters. It might have been cooler if Jada used figures in place of the video game artwork. Or add some form of personalization with her likes/dislikes from the game.

Likeness: Chun-Li is terrific. If this isn’t my favorite figure of her, she’s no less than Number 2. Again, her only competition is the much more expensive Storm Collectibles figure.

The sculpting is sensational all around from the ox horns hairstyle to the silk brocades and ribbons keeping it in place. Her bangs are just right with a good amount of strands covering one side of her forehead. I love her neutral expression, which can be read as several emotions.

While a lot of companies would leave it to talented painters to cover the detailing in her blue qipao, Jada Toys actually sculpted all of the details. That’s very impressive in this scale. It’s textured as well to really show off the detail work. Her spiked bracelets are appropriately larger and look ready to cause some damage.

She’s got a narrow waist that leads to her skirt and muscular thighs. Without going into a cartoonish direction, Chun-Li’s thighs and butt have actual definition. Her boots also have good, sculpted work as well with the laces and lining.

Paint: Jada did spectacularly clean paint work with Chun-Li. Yellow is a pain color to operate if it doesn’t get the right amount of paint apps to prevent bleeding and transparency. No problem here.

The lining of the qipao is pretty clean. There are a few spotty areas, but the target area is so slender it’s forgivable.

Unlike Fei Long, Chun-Li didn’t have any issues with paint flaking at her joints.

Scale:  Although Fei Long is one of the shorter members of the World Warriors, he’s still taller than Chun-Li. I appreciate that right from the start they’re diversifying heights with the characters.

Articulation: Jada Toys really scores in this category. Chun-Li has more articulation than it seems. Like a Storm Collectibles figure, the engineering on the figure is exceptional allowing for any and all essential Chun-Li poses.

Best of all, there’s so much give in the joints that it doesn’t feel like she’s on the verge of breaking when I hit any particularly deep poses.

In another good sign, I was trying out more straight from the game poses with Chun-Li than I needed for this review. She was just a lot of fun to pose thanks to the neck, torso and hips joints. They really have amazing range allowing for multiple ways to hit a pose.

Chun-Li doesn’t have the butterfly joint setup of Fei Long, but her arms can pull in close to her front well enough that it’s not a missing joint.

Now I’m really looking forward to getting the M. Bison for her to battle.

Chun-Li has

  • head
  • neck
  • shoulders
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • mid-torso
  • torso
  • hips (ball-jointed)
  • thigh
  • knees (double-jointed)
  • ankles

Accessories:  Jada again provides good value with providing the necessary accessories for Chun-Li and keeping the price reasonable.

She’s got a swappable set of hands for chops and palm strikes.

Additionally, she’s got a blue translucent effect for her Lightning Kick special. It plugs into a special base via a clear stand. This is a simple yet very effective means of pulling off a key move for Chun-Li.

Finally, she’s got an alternate portrait. This one is a yelling head sculpt that’s fitting for Chun Li when she’s fired up in action. I like the intensity with this sculpt as it looks straight from the games. Sure adding her Kikoken fireball would have been a great touch, but for this price point it’s OK.

Worth It?  Once again, I’m impressed that Jada could get this amount of articulation to pull off all her signatures moves and toss in some useful accessories for under $30. The $25 price point seems like a deal.

Rating: 10 out of 10

Yeah, all the hype Chun-Li got was justified. The fun articulation and lack of any bothersome quality control issues makes for a fantastic figure good enough to further sell this Jada Toys SF line.
