Dark Horse reviews 8/21/24 – Night Club 2 #1
Night Club 2 #1 marks the welcome return of the most unique Millarworld titles that debuted last year.
Three high schoolers got turned into vampires and used their abilities and newfound powers to become social media stars. And part-time heroes.
The trio became a duo once Sam realized his crush, Amy, was interested in their friend Danny. That didn’t stop Night Club as a whole from participating in Big Game.
Writer Mark Millar is juggling multiple titles as usual, but Night Club 2 #1 doesn’t show any signs he’s spreading himself too thin.
Millar writes teens extraordinarily well as he doesn’t try to write them like an adult thinks teenagers speak. They’re just written like regular characters who just happen to be younger.
Starguard and Yellowbird are going after a big crime lord and in a welcome shift from the norm, the local police are on friendly terms with them instead of treating them like criminals.
Sam is busy using his abilities to be the star of the high school basketball team. That feels more realistic from a kid bullied to use his powers to make himself the most popular kid in school. At least until the crime lord starts taking notice of Sam’s actions potentially setting the Night Club on a collision course.

In a rarity for a Millarworld title, Millar reunites with the artists from the previous volume Juanan Ramirez. This is a welcome bonus as Night Club 2 #1 benefits from the visual continuity. Ramirez has established a strong flow with the action and artwork stays at a very high level.
Fabiana Mascolo’s color work is sharp with vivid colors that play against each other well. Letterer Clem Robins keeps the dialogue easy to read with fun sound effect placement.
The only knock on Night Club 2 #1 is the random mentions of characters from DC and Marvel. Sure the references make sense, but the Millarworld universe features enough cool characters that the distinguished marvelous competition doesn’t need the shout outs.
Night Club 2 #1 shows the series has lost none of its bite with an intriguing premise for this new volume.
