Star Wars The Black Series Clone Captain Rex review (2024)

Captain Rex is an essential part of any decent Clone Wars collection display. I hadn’t finished watching Clone Wars when the original Captain Rex was released in 2017. Hasbro re-released this figure outside of an exclusive window in 2019. And again, I hadn’t wrapped Clone Wars.

By the time I did finish in 2020, the BS Captain Rex had become prohibitively expensive. Thankfully, Hasbro finally decided to take pity on us slackers and put Rex back in rotation with a 2024 reissue.

Let’s see if the second-in-command of the 501st was worth this extended wait.

Packaging: This is a reissue all the way around as Rex has the vintage Black Series packaging with the nearly all black setup, greyscale image of the character and red insert.

The red helps to showcase the figure but it’s nowhere near as exciting as the modern Black Series with the cool mural.

Likeness:  Captain Rex uses the standard Clone Trooper body with ARC trooper extras namely the ammo pack on the right chest and left shoulder pauldron.

To aid in his articulation, Hasbro opted to give him a soft goods skirt as opposed to the usual plastic piece.

His head sculpt definitely has that Temuera Morrison appearance. Rex’s hair sculpt might be a bit higher than it was on Clone Wars as he kept it far closer.

Rex’s left hand doesn’t have a trigger finger, so it looks a little weird having him do his dual blaster-wielding poses.

MORE:

Paint:  There were some issues with the early BS Rex. His armor had some dingy, dirty segments but the torso was perfectly clean. That’s not a problem here as the armor throughout has muddy, dirtier grimy elements.

Hasbro did a nice job of matching the painted blue pauldron and stripes with the shade of blue for the soft goods skirt.

His silver strip on the sides of his torso has a more exaggerated orange rust than necessary, however. It is fun tallying up all of the kill marks on his armor.

Somewhat disappointing is the fact that Rex’s shade of blue doesn’t match up with the other Clone Troopers.

Scale:  Captain Rex is the same height as the other clones, naturally, and is around the same height as Anakin with his helmet off.

Articulation: Captain Rex was frequently out front on missions leading the charge in battle alongside Anakin and Ahsoka so his articulation is key.

He’s able to strike some good poses thanks to the semi-floating torso. His shoulders have terrific up and down range thanks to the flexible material used for the shoulder pads.

Captain Rex has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • elbow (with swivel)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • hips
  • thighs
  • knees (swivel)
  • ankles

He’s got his signature twin DC-17 blaster pistols. The detail on them is sharp and as usual, fully screen accurate. They fit snugly into the holsters on either side of his waist.

Rex also has a removable helmet. His helmet stands out even among the clones thanks to the Jaig Eyes painted on the sides of the fin as a sign of Rex’s courage in battle. The Jaig Eyes seem painted too high as most reference pics show them closer to the orange rust lining. I had to check around for a while to catch the reference for the rest of the helmet paint.

There’s a lot more orange rust shading than I remembered. It seems like Hasbro brought the “cheekbone” paint higher instead of placing it in the grooved helmet cheekbone. This makes the paint look bunched up closer than it should be making his helmet look almost too colorful. It had the range finder that goes back and forth.

While removable, the helmet is a tight fit. It’s so snug that it doesn’t properly go over his head leaving a small portion of his chin exposed instead of resting flush like the other clones.

Worth it?  Captain Rex was a $20 figure, but inflation pops him up to $24.99. That definitely beats the now crumbling aftermarket prices so I’m fine with this price.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Captain Rex was a must-have though there’s enough paint issues, the tight helmet and the lack of a left trigger hand that hold him back somewhat. When Hasbro revisits Rex as part of the Ahsoka line, I’d expect those issues to be addressed.

Where to get it?  Great question. Hasbro Pulse is sold out. Entertainment Earth is pre-sold out. Amazon still has the older versions of Rex up.
