Transformers #12 ensures that no one can claim to have any idea what’s going to happen in this series. From epic showdowns to shocking betrayals, this book packs so much into every issue. Optimus Prime and his small Autobots squad have to contend with not only Soundwave and Shockwave, but now the reassembled Devastator. The hour seems pretty dark and there’s not much spark left. Or is there?

Writer Daniel Warren Johnson refuses to let his foot off the gas constantly bringing new incredible scenarios to life. The best part is how consistent Johnson continues to portray the characters. They don’t act out of character in any situation. When Prime faces a dire, everything seems lost moment he rises to the occasion making for a true inspirational hero. Wheeljack reacts like a scientist in the middle of a battlefield. Alita-1 is all about the war and avenging her fellow Autobots while Shockwave is a dangerous, dastardly villain.

Jorge Corona’s art was spectacular for Transformers #12. It’s still astonishing how Skybound managed to recruit an artist who can so perfectly capture Johnson’s lively art style and lose absolutely nothing in the handoff. Corona’s art is incredible constantly making the big moments Johnson writes and expanding them to an even bigger level. The synergy between this duo is very impressive.

Colorist Mike Spicer keeps the frenetic artwork easy to follow even with characters with similar color schemes like Prime and Cliffjumper distinct. Letterer Rus Wooton always seems like he’s having the most fun on this title with the booming and creatively placed sound effects.

Transformers #12 officially wraps Year 1 of one of the pillars of not just the Energon Universe, but Image Comics as well. It’s a great time to be a Transformers fan and this issue sets up some very compelling storylines for Year 2.
